Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am thinking about making this cake but can anyone tell me how to achieve the silver color? I have seen some that aren't as silver as this but this one looks more real. Do you buy it like this? Or paint the silver on.

I'm pretty sure you can't buy silver fondant Wendy - never seen it.  This could have been airbrushed, but you can paint it on too.  Get a nice bright silver lustre dust and mix it with lemon extract or vodka (something with a high alcohol content),  Use a large brush to brush it on.  You will probably need to do it a few times to get this depth of colour.  So do it once, let it dry (don't paint over wet or it will just smear and streak), then go over again, till your happy with the look.  As for the dust, make sure you find one that is edible as some of the brighter colours are not.  Clare Bowman does a Bright Silver that might do it.  Alternatively you can buy a can of silver glaze spray - PME do one.  Much easier than painting it on!

ok I ordered the PME spray, can't wait to try this! Thanks so much!

look forward to seeing it!

here it is, thanks again Katy, this PME silver spray worked great, I paid $11.99 for it and it took the whole 4oz can though. I needed to touch up a few spots after it ran out so I bought some wilton silver spray and it doesn't even compare, it was see thru thin and ran. Of course it was a fraction of the cost but would  not have done the job I wanted to do. I used an entire batch of MMF so the fondant was almost too thick to cut but I couldn't get it to look right when I made it thinner, maybe a trick I haven't found yet would work better. Over all I was happy with it and it was my first time using choc ganache and that was sooo yummy! Since it was for my grandson I actually got to try one of my cakes!

Hey, that worked really well!  Great job.  Yes, it would have taken a lot - 1 can doesn't go very far.  did you start with grey fondant?  If not, it would have covered better if you had as any slight 'misses' wouldn't have shown.

Thank you Katy, I thought the same thing, I should have started with gray.

we learn something every time Wendy!  It's a good idea whenever you are going to spray something to start with a base colour the same.

You could have cut wide strips of grey fondant, then attached them to the cake. Folding them over each other as you go. Then spraying with silver. Think that might would have worked. Difficult fondant covering to copy/replicate. You did a great job.

hey that's a great idea June, wish I knew that idea, probably would have taken a lot less fondant than I used to and it was really hard to cut through. I was glad it was for my own family, haha

We learn with every cake we do. I've tried to learn from my failures. Hard, but the best teacher.

June has a very good point there Wendy, wish I had thought to mention that to you.  That is basically how I did the pleating effect  round the side of this one
