Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi! my name is Hailey, and i'm doing a project on cake decorating! I am new to the community but i am willing to learn everything! My end piece hopefully is i'm going to bake and decorate a beautiful cake for my senior prom and the theme is elegance so i was thinking a weddingish cake? So if you want to write any tips for me that you think would be helpful that would be awsome. Also, i really want to work with fontant, so talking about that would be helpful too! THANKS SO MUCH!

What a fun idea Hailey! I am a beginner too and know right where you are. Where I usually start for inspiration is googling the type of cake you want in google images. I find that I can find different techniques to use on my cakes and seeing them actually on the cakes helps so much. Then I draw out my cake on paper a few different ways to see which I like better. Good luck! Be sure to post pictures!

Oops Another hint...do a test run (or 2)of your cake! There would be nothing worse than it falling through last minute!
We have students at our high school that are doing senior projects and you are smart to start early. I had a student come to me to mentor her last year about 3 weeks before the project was due... I told her she was too late for me to help her.. I could see myself doing the project for her.

Do you have a mentor to help you? That would be very helpful too.

Best of luck!
HI EVERYONE!! thank you so much for all of your help, I wouldn't have known where to start if it wasn't for you so thank you! I signed up for cake decorating class yesterday at Michaels,GREAT DEAL! thank you!! I am starting class March 3rd so i'm excited about that! Reguardless of not knowing much, I am going to make my first practice cake this February vacation for one of my friends birthdays so i can make it for a reason. I will definitely take a picture of it and show it to yall!! As for now until the classes start I have to fieldwork to become an insider into cake decorating so I am visiting a local bakery and asking a professional and maybe watch a cake be made for the experience. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what I can do to fieldwork? And another questions, do I need to have a commerical sized oven to do my baking?
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! YOU HAVE BEEN WONDERS
Hailey :)
Hi! yeah our teacher has assigned us to start now, and the amount of work we have to do, I wouldn't think of starting any later! haha yes, I justed asked my mentor on Wedesday and she said yes and we need to have mandatory meetings once a cycle and report back to our senior project teacher, so there's no way out of it haha!
Thank you for the suggestion
Hailey

The more decorations you make in advance, the easier it will be to put the whole cake together after you bake it. Anything done in gum paste, royal icing flooding, or chocolate can be done weeks in advance. You'll have plenty of time to experiment, paint, etc. Then the decorations you do the day you cover the cake in fondant can be relatively simple. You add the pre-made decorations and it pulls the whole thing together. Once you pick out the special touches you want to add, you can learn one thing at a time and make that particular decoration for the cake. Since you're learning, if you make a few different variations, you can pick the one that comes out the best. Molding chocolate is foolproof for a beginner and you can find all kinds of great molds.
Hailey,
Best of luck and be sure to send a PM if you need help. I am sure you will have plenty of suggestions! I work at a Middle School and we live in a small town and our kiddos have their senior projects that are crazy. Our youngest son built an arbor and an addition to our patio along with rose gardens off the patio for me a few years ago. He started in August before his senior year and finsihed it in March. Best of luck and watch tutorials on YouTube too. Lots of good ones there. Edna from Design Me A Cake has wonderful flower tutorials.
