Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

When a customer turns down delivery, and does it themselves and at the arrival the cake falls apart, because they did not know how to transport it properly. What would you do to try to accomodate them on thier special day? Or, are they left on their own, because they should have had it delivered?

 

What are your thoughts on how to handle a situation like this one?

Hi Gina,
I think you should have a clause for cakes that require delicate care or assembly. Perhaps your company insists on delivery for these types of cakes. I have seen cake companies insist on this.

If the client says no to this, then you may want to have this written into an agreement, and have them sign off on it.

I agree with Fashionista....let them know that if they pick it up themselves you cannot guarantee the cake once it leaves your establishment....in writing......and give them instructions on how to transport properly like placing the cake on the floor board and not the back seat....if they want you to fix it then you should charge them an hourly fee...all this should be in the contract if possible.....

Agreed. Some cakes I will allow customers to take, but anything requiring cake supports and/or assembly, I do myself. I have a reputation to uphold and it's important that the finished product is consistently perfect. My customers pay for this quality and this clause is clear from the get-go so they know what they're getting into.
