Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Alright, I am getting ready to make a practice wedding cake and I'm not sure how to stack it. Do I need to put pillars in the cake for support if it's going to be stacked right on top of each other? I hope that makes sense! Any help would be great!!!! THank you :)

ok that makes more sense! I thought the pilars might take up to much cake! Thank you so much. I'm headed to Michael's right now!
you can get them in the woodworking section for less. Also, you need to put a cardboard cake board under each layer-that is the support that will be key. For the dowels, make sure you put a hole for the dowel in the center of each cake board.

Good luck! I just did my first 3 tiered cake this past weekend, and it turned out awesome!

For each tier that requires the dowels, you can use a cake board that is the size of the cake that will lay on top as a guide to mark the top of the cake. Then you will need to space the dowels evenly apart. It's a good idea to use a ruler. The larger the tier, the more dowels you should use. The top tier does not require dowels since it will not be supporting another cake. Then one long dowel goes through the center of the cake. If you make a point on it, it will push through the cakes more easily. Push it in, mark the spot where you'll need to cut it, and remove it. You don't want the long dowel sticking out of the top of the cake, so cut it just a bit shorter than the mark you make. Once that dowel is in place, you'll need to frost over the spot it went through.
Thank you everyone! I had no idea about some of your suggestions! I'm excited to get started!!!! :)
Another option is to try bubble straws. They are thick plastic straws. I have even used the straws from Mcdonalds for two tier cakes. The dowels work great but are so hard to cut... the straws are much easier.
I use straws also.
lol! I wish I would have known about this site when I did my first tiered cake. I put dowel supports in but didn't think to put a cardboard support under each tier. TMy cake ended up starting to sink so I took the top two layers off and more or less had two cakes. It messed up my buttercream and I had to redo part of it. So glad I know now! Excited to start a new tiered cake!!!
Hi Shallena, I'm glad you like the site. It's only a month old, so it probably didn't exist when you made your cake.

FYI, guys, I wouldn't trust straws to support heavy cake layers. They do bend. I would gauge that according to the cake size.

Once you make marshmallow fondant, you'll never waste your money buying it again!
