Hi Sue and welcome. Well your cupcakes were so pretty. It's always nice to give your dinner guests something personally homemade, makes such a difference and shows you have put effort into entertaining them. Enjoy belonging!

It's funny Sue - I am really not that artistic in other areas. My Mum was a wonderful artist - drawing, painting, caking, designing, flower arranging, the works. Yet I was never much good at any of that. Then I discovered that I was actually quite creative when it came to cakes, so a bit of her did rub off on me after all! My main problem is that I have great ideas, but then struggle to bring the idea to fruition!
This is SOooooo me as well Katy. I wish I could take a snap shop of what I was designing in my brain!!!! I have a hard time putting what is in my head on paper. I wish I could afford some sort of cake "drawing/designing" software. But, alas, I cannot. Even if I had it, it would have to be simple, cause I am so not a techy!!!!
I have learned that I work best if I don't put my ideas onto paper.....some people might think it's crazy, but I never, ever promise a client exactly what their cake will look like. I have only had a couple people who weren't ok with that, but that's just the way I am. I have found that I think I have a great idea in my head, and then when I go to do it I either really don't like it as much as I thought I would or I think of something better. It's funny - most of the referrals I get just give me the basic theme and tell me to do what I want because that's how they understand I work, and they liked the cake that was at whatever event they got my name from.
I agree with that Joann. The only time I sketch an idea first is if my brain is all over the show and I just can't decide which route to take. I sometimes find sketching and painting in helps with that. But mostly I know that what I have in my head won't be the way it comes out on the cake, so I improvise as I go.
Hello! My Name is Phil and I am from the State of Ohio in The USA! I found Cakes We Bake a few weeks ago when searching for an idea image on google for a cake I was doing. I love the sight and already have learned a lot and met some pretty neat folks from all over the place. Amazing!
I am 42 years old and have a beautiful wife and two boys. One Teenager (14) and a Kindergartener (5). He was our little miracle baby and somedays we feel too old for this, but we love every minute of it and he keeps us young! :)
I am a Children's Pastor at a decent sized church here in Ohio. I work with kids from birth up to 6th grade. We have about 300 kids in these age groups each Wednesday and Sunday. It is a total blessing to my life to teach the kids about Jesus.
In college I worked in the grocery industry to pay my way through school. I became bakery/Deli manager for an Ohio based grocery for about 5 years. I learned the basics of cake decorating at that time but never did anything with it after college ended. 3 years ago my son, then 12 wanted a Mario Cake for his birthday. My wife and I were watching Cake Boss one night and he was using modeling chocolate and kept saying it was like working with clay. My wife said "I bet you could make a Mario for this cake so we don't have to buy that cheap looking but expensive plastic stuff." I love to work with clay so this is the basis of her thinking that I could do this.
We looked up a recipe for homemade modeling chocolate and I tried it - the rest is history. I remember a fairly delicious buttercream recipe from my grocery days and so the cake was a huge hit. I had lots of people asking if I would make them cakes at that point. About 6 months later we had loads of people asking for 3D cakes and sculpted cakes because noone in our area did anything like that. And so we started taking orders and selling cakes out of our home on the weekends and now pretty much book up 3 to 4 months in advance. It has been a total blessing for us. I'm so grateful for the natural talent that God has given me to do this! Outside of the little grocery training I had, I've learned everything else on my own through trial and error. It has been an amazing ride and I love making cakes for people and praying over the families that I'm making them for, every weekend.
I get most of my business from facebook which was amazing to me when I started. I posted a cake pic on there one day to show my family out West and that's when I started getting order requests. The amazing benefit of technology... (Feel free to take a look at my page and pics... Center Stage Cakes)
I love this site and can't wait to get to know more of the nice people on here. I've learned a ton already!!
Blessings,
