Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I'm fairly new to cake decorating and realize after looking at pictures what a difference the cake board makes in presentation. Besides foil, what else does everyone use? A lot of it looks like wrapping paper, but doesn't that absorb the grease?

its actual cake foil. Craft stores like Michaels carries in in rolls, Wilton. It is supposed to me more grease resistant. I use that and foil. Cake often doesn't last that long on the plate. ;-)
You can actually cover it in fondant too...I've not done that yet...maybe I'm too cheap.
I like to use the Cake Foil, but more often I use self adhesive shelf liner. I buy it specifically for the cakes and keep a supply of it with my decorating supplies.
GREAT Idea! I think we can get that at our dollar store too!

Please make sure whatevery your cake sits on is food safe material. Shelf liner and wrapping paper aren't food safe.
I purchase cake drums for most of my cakes that are made for cakes.
Good point, But the cake doesn't actually sit on that larger board, does it?!?! I put mine all on the cardboard plates same size as cake, then when I'm done I'll put it on my foil (or whatever) display board, so shelf paper and such wouldn't be touching the cake. Does that even make sense?

I think what Deah ment is that if the cake is touching the surface it needs to be food safe. Some plasitcs and some of the foils are not food safe. I bought a roll of foil from a place that was selling foil for use for cakes and I used it and the cake had the color from the foil on the bottom of the cake as I cut it. I called them and they said it was actually florist foil and they just sell it for cakes. Not a good idea on their part... and no refund either! Oh well... they are not in business anymore!

No problem. I should have made myself more clear. I place my cakes directly on the drum. I sometimes forget that a lot of people use a cake circle between the drum and cake.
cakes circles! That's what they're called! LOL

If you pipe a border around the bottom of your cake and it rests on the foil that is not food safe you cant do that either..someone will eat the border.....You really have to be careful what you use... I have seen some horrendous stuff on and in cakes....feathers, wires, metal toys, colored paper cut outs....omg....if you cant eat it or serve food on it it doesnt belong on a cake....IMHO....
