Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I know I have seen different things on this site about the figures, but I can't seem to find what I am looking for so I am just going to ask.

I am making a Noah's Ark cake for a baby shower.  I am trying to decide if I am going to make sculptured animals, seen so many examples or cut out animals.  The sculpted ones are so cute, and since itis a two teir cake it would work out.  I figured I would make the bottom look like the ark and have the animals coming out the top.

What is the best medium for the sculpting gumpaste, fondant, mix?  I am going to start working on them and just want to make sure I use the right materials.  I just hope the come out looking like anamils and not blobs.

Depending on how big they are going to be, you could start with rice krispy treats and build up with gumpaste,or if they are going to be small (under 4") then just use straight gumpaste, but that's just my opinion :-)
For sculpting animal and human figures I like to use a mixture of gumpaste and fondant. There is a wealth of information and lovely pictures on the net. Just start trying, if you dont like it, just knead your dough and start over again until you are satisfied. Check out 'Mystical Mischief's web site 'Creative Celebration Cakes', she specializes in fondant figurines and has some great step-by-step and video tutorials.
Yes I too use gumpaste & fondant 50-50 to model figures. You can find tutorials on you tube on how to model animal & figures
I do like the 50/50 mixture of fondant/gumpaste. I will check out some of those videos too. Thanks guys.
Hi Gretchen I highly recommend using this recipe to make your modeling paste:
250g of sugarpaste/fondant
1/2 teaspoon of CMC

Sprinkle the CMC on your work surface and knead it into your sugarpaste. Then once that has been fully incorporated together..Place in a ziploc bag for at least an hour over night is better. then begin working on your figures. The CMC makes the fondant more pliable tow ork with and doestn dry out as fast as gumpaste. However once left out for a while will ahrden. This is the method I have used and if you can have a look at the photos I have in my profile you will see I have made a couple of figures using this method...
Best of Luck~ Brigid
I use the tylose and fondant or just straight gumpaste. If your figures are small they are pretty simple... start with the body and shape it then add a piece of toothpick dipped into gumglue to attach the head to the body... if they are small enough you will not need the toothpick... it just keeps the head from falling off easily. Add your arms and legs or legs as animals would be... using a small piece of toothpick in each for support. Animals are fun to make.
I prefer to use uncooked spagetti (not the very fine spagettini) instead of wooden toothpicks, this is safer for small children if swallowed by mistake.

Where do you get your tylose powder from, I haven't seen it in the stores?

I finally started on them... here is my Lions, I think they are so cute.....

Well I have them on my page if you want to see them right side up
I have looked at your photo page, your animals for Noah's Ark are very cute. I have also made a lion and a giraffe (only one each), as well as a rabbit for a children's story cake, as wll as several animal faces for cupcakes. Maybe you would like to see them for ideas. You can see them on my photo page.
How many different animals do you plan to make? Are you making the Ark as well? Keep up the good work.
