Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I just received an email from Jackie at Cake Central, she has asked me if I'd be interested in being in the magazine!!!
Ooooh, hmmmmm, let me think about that a moment. I mean I have to wash my hair, get my hair cut, get the kids to school, organise to get the cat neutered .....I think I can fit it in.

Very exciting. Congrats!
If anyone deserves it it is you!!! You my dear, have a gift for writing! <3 Congrats!!!

That is AWESOME.  Congrats!

OMG Bettina

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!   How exciting for you.  What will the content be...a cake....an interview... a tutorial....what????    :o)

lol you go girl but think you forgot clean the house, do the dishes, wash the car, and do the mammoth pile of ironing thats been building up for weeks 'cos you've not had time to do it with all the cake stuff going on!!!!! but seriously big big BIG congrats x

Way to go Bettina!  Only just come across you recently in the fondant figures discussion, but from that I can tell that you really deserve this and will make a huge success of it.  Great!

Thanks everyone! Now that the news has sunk in I'm as nervous as hell! It will be a 'themed' cake (which has to remain secret) and that's exciting. Of course the nervous bit is 'will I be good enough?' There's always that element of self doubt isn't there?

Years ago when I started getting back into cake decorating, people would ask, 'Can you do *insert request here*' and I would have to pause before answering - I had to think, could I do it?  When clients ask this now, and most have seen my facebook page - I just raise an eyebrow and look at them and they laugh and say, what a stupid question. LOL.
It's an indication of how far I have come that there is no pause these days and I have absolute confidence that I can deliver whatever is requested, and I really like that feeling.
My family life went to hell in a handbasket last year and throughout it all I got on with cake decorating. Learning new skills, googleing like mad, spending time sourcing tools, ingredients and cutters and even completing a course in micro business management! It didn't stop the hurt and distress, but it did make me push myself to excel in whatever I turned my hand to and it has held me in good stead this year.
I am really pedantic when it comes to detail and perfection is my byword; but these days I don't get all Bakezilla about it and find a way to either work with a flaw or camouflage it. (I can show you all these perceived flaws in many of my cakes but of course when I do thisto friends, they look really  hard to see this so called flaw, then I get 'the eyebrow', a pitying look, a pat on the back and a 'You really need to get out more.' statement. LOL).
If you start to focus ONLY on what you think is wrong with a cake, you stop seeing all the really amazing work you have put in elsewhere - handmaking figures, flowers, cake jewels, etc. You also fail to notice just how good you're getting as you still think of yourself as a hobbyist who can throw a little something together!
You miss feeling good about what you have achieved, which I think is more important. If you feel good about what you're creating, it shows in your work and, oh call me a big fat old hippy, I think that positive energy goes into your cake and people respond to that. You can see it not only when they look at your creations, but also when they consume it.
Just because I can see it, doesn't mean that anyone else would recognise it as not completely perfect; I've learned to let some of that perfection obsession go. It can get in the way of getting a job done. Of course I'm not saying that I've let the reigns go so much that my cakes are going to turn up on Cakes Wrecks in the 'THIS is what the bride wanted....and THIS is what the bride got.' section any time soon, I've just learned that there will always be something you're not absolutely 100% pleased with and that's life baby.

My kind a gal!

I'm very happy for you, Bettina. You are an inspiration to everyone going through a tough time in life. Life throws us really tough obstacles and we have to find it in ourselves to trust that we can overcome them and find our way to success and happiness. It's easier said than done and I've been in your shoes.

Congrats.

Congratulation! I can see why they want you in their magazine. I looked at some of your creations and was awed. Your comment here is sooooo humble. I think you will be a big inspiration to me and a couple of my new friends. Good luck, I know you will impress!

Bettina, I just received an e-mail two days ago from Jackie as well for the same reason. I am curious...did you receive any compensation for your photo shoot and the cake baking supplies? I wrote back to her yesterday telling her that for the next couple of months I am not available. I just got another e-mail this morning from her asking if in the future I could be available. Could you tell me what to expect?
