Honeslty, I've never been a huge fan of piping. Maybe because I haven't "mastered" it yet and it's just plain messy! LOL! I stick with the standard tips that are easy (15, 17, 19 sea shells/stars and flower ones). Personally, I prefer working with fondant and doing sculpted cakes. Wilton has good products... but I'm a newbie. Haven't found anything that I thought was better yet. Good luck to you! :0)
to be honest i like all my tips , except for my small leaf tips , i have a tendancy of just useing my bigger leaf tips they dont casue me problems with pipingmy icing out of them , my small leaf tips give me constant problems, but i am also just recently stated trying to learn how too make other types of flowers then just roses, i have tryed carnations, and i think either lillies or daisies , but to be honest with that, LOL i dont know names of the different types of flowers, so i go by pictures, and try to make the pictures , until i get each flower name drilled into my head LOL
On their website Wilton has several good pages that show each tip and a sample of what it does. I printed these out for reference. They also publish a book but it doesn't show as much as I'd hoped.

However there is an older (70s) set of Wilton books, Wilton Way of Cake Decorating by Eugene T. & Marilyn Sullivan that I looked at. You can sometimes find them at libraries or Amazon. Volume 3 of the set is The Uses of Tubes.

The decorating style is retro, which you may or may not be into, but the techniques are demonstrated quite thoroughly. The other two volumes are interesting too -- one is about different styles of decorating around the world, and the other has a huge cake with all the state flowers demonstrated one by one.

I enjoy learning about the older decorating styles as well as contemporary trends. I started a discussion here on 70s "foo-foo" as I call it, just to see if people still like it or what.

Finally, the best way to learn is often just to grab some icing and a practice board (or a cake for your family to eat!) and PLAY! :)
i'm so glad to hear someone else say they dont like their small leaf tip, cause guess what i hate mine tooo!! so much trouble! lol

i have the wilton 56 piece kit and with a coupon 1/2 off never shop without a coupon, i don't use their leaf tips, just don't make good leaves, i'm sure someone can give you the number, i love 869 for the swirl on cupcakes, nice clean lines, i have a book i really like, show's you tips and what they can do, it by wilton, the uses of the most popular decorating tips, 17 is a popular tip, there is a lady on u-tube that show's 6 different way's to that tip. i have a few atco but don't see much of a difference.
The Wilton tips are fine...they are made well and offer lots of variety. I love piping work and fell in love with lace filligree and brush and freehand embroidery. I think it is very elegant and you use small round tips like 0,1,2 and sometimes 3. It takes some practice but once you get the hang of it, it isn't that hard. You just need a steady hand. The set of 26 tips is a good basic set and has just about everything you would need for decorating. You can do shell borders, round pearl borders, basketweave, flowers, swags, bows, ruffless, pretty much everything.
well its nice to know others have same problem as me with smalll leaf tips LOL

thanks so much ladies =D
The leaf tip I like best looks like a plain notch like this > I forget what the number is...
Someone mentioned having a steady hand when piping... that's certainly not me! LOL! I think that is why I'm not overly excited about doing buttercream/piping work. Especially when it comes to writing the message on the cake! I think I need the most practice with that.
LOL, Everytime i pip icing on my cake for some reason my hand shakes most of the time LOL, its either i still have air in my bag which i have a hard time birping my bag or i have tiny holes inmy piping bags LOL, but i always shake with my piping bags LOL

Karen Marie, I think the one you're referring to is the 352 -- or close to that. My instructor called it a "Pac-Man" tip!

Wes & Jaci, my instructor had to keep getting after me about proper hand position and not having too much icing in the bag at one time -- when she would show me I had more strength and control. And then I didn't have to squeeze so hard, which I think is one thing that can cause the shaking. The other thing would be excess caffeine, LOL!
