I want to use this as a separator for the Scarlet Macaw cake. I do not know if I will be heavily penalized for not covering it with fondant. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I think you are right, Bonnie. If I want to use it as a separator, I need to cover it with a sugar mosaic.
That is an interesting idea, June. I may just have to do that. It is pretty heavy, made of glass. My intention was to have just a 6" x 4" layer on top of it and the birds will be supported by pvc inserted through all layers. Their "stem" (for lack of a better word) will be inserted into the pvc, so no weight will actually be on the cake. The pvc will be bolted to the base, cake drum (made of plywood and covered, of course).
But she is incorporating it into the layers of the cake, not as a cake stand.
that sounds good June !good idea !
Oh, wow, guys. Now I am blushing....... Thanks so much for your kind support. I do this for fun but I am a competitor. Probably comes from being an athlete in high school :o)
I had considered doing just as you suggested, Bonnie, covering the whole thing with a mosaic design. I want to use Mayan carvings on the layers, but I may run out of time. I do have the flowers made....I hope!
Thank you all for your suggestions and encouragement!
It sure is Purdy! lol If you are only shooting for the beginners class, it might not matter. But I personally think you should enter for the grand prize. Your work is no way 'beginner' quality. It IS up there with the best, and this is not just talking to hear myself talk, ask some of the others? Get June to ask Nick, since they are so buddy-buddy lol Or she could show it to Amelia Carbine. Truth, next to your particular style of presentation, I would list a lot of the others as 'cartoonists'.
hummm ! I still don't know what to say ! sorry ! I wish you luck , I don't think you will need it , your work is so beautiful , if they cant see that ,that would be crazy ! for some1 to do a cake with your skill having only 1 yr of caking under your belt ! your truly a winner !
They don't have any rules. The only stipulation for my beginner class - for decorators of one year or less - is the base is not to exceed 24" x 24". The only other class with a stipulation is the Wedding Cake category and it just says it must be a fondant cake. It is just a fair - not like the Tulsa State Fair, either :O0 .... I HOPE!
