My birthday cake (yesterday)... It's a carved yellow cake covered with bc & fondant. I bought gold dust by Wilton specially for that Aladdin Lamp but it turned out to be totally invisible when applied whether on fondant or bc!!!
However, I didn't let that spoil my celebration, afterall the cake was just for me & my husband, so it was ok :)

Thank you Sandra (blushing)... I enjoyed seeing the faces of many friends here after more than a year! So thought to do the same ;)

Thanks for posting your photo, my Egyptian friend.  You are gorgeous!  I enjoy "seeing" with whom I am speaking.

Thanks for the explanation, Mai.......but I still believe it is a "magic lantern"!

LOL Sandra... Trust me there's no gold there, just a faint shiny effect. I managed to buy afterwards Gold Sheen by Americolor and I just shake & paint... I love the effect (finally!) :)

For the cake, I used one skewer accross the body of the lamp (horizontally) then few toothpicks to keep the pieces vertically in place. It was a small cake, so even the fondant helped to keep it firm.

Am I crazy or what?  I see gold!  It looks pretty, too.  Great cake.  How did you keep it suspended?

oh you dont add the lemon extract it to  you just touch the lemon to the dusted brush and blend, yes it will get pastey, but you need to wet it more , it may take 2 coats ! i place some dust on my table , than a few drops of lemon extract , or vodka,  touch ea one to get it to a paintable applacation needed, if you look at my chocolate heads i made thats how i painted them ,

Ah yes... Petal dust is used dry and "lustre" dust is what you need for shine..... We all live & learn..

Thank you ladies for your greetings & nice comments on the cake.

Apparently, after reading some reviews on the net, gold "dust" is different from gold "luster" althought - English being my second language - they sounded the same to me! Wilton's Shimmer gold dust is really not good. With lemon extract, it turns into a paste making lumps on top of the surface. If applied after wetting with water (as instructed at the back of the package) it does the same lumpy paste. The best thing is to dry-powder it, then it'll just give a faint spark that will show only on "white" fondant, but wouldn't really be effective on colored fondant.

I was a bit "very" unlucky with my first order from Amazon... the gel paste colors were sent to me as airbrush colors instead and this shimmer thing wasn't good. I'm learning the hard way!

Is CK really that much better Gail?? So hard for me to find CK brand here. When I have it's pricey.
