Made for my sons surprise 30th birthday party tonight. So hard making a cake when someone is living in your house!!! Constantly trooping upstairs to hide in my bedroom closet!!! Would have managed this without my hubby’s help. Certainly was a learning experience that’s for sure. Thanks to Nancy on here for her skate cake and advice she gave me. Don’t think I’ll make one again for a long time!!
Cake is a orange Creamsicle with orange icing. No fondant covering…as my son doesn’t care for it….another challenge as I’m not the best bc smoother. Rather than putting skate on top of cake, chose to put on a pond /rink. Son played at a pond near our house constantly…so thought he would appreciate the gesture. Added fondant snowballs & crushed fondant on top and sides for snow. Would have made a hockey stick & puck….but ran out of time. I hope my son gets a kick out of this…. : o)

I think I'll have more luck with glucose here than 'karo' or clear corn syrup.  I think they sell it in chemists over here as it used to be an old fashioned cough remedy?????????????????  I know Dr. Oetker do it too.

Hey June - just googled and apparently it seems we can use liquid glucose if we want clear!  Something new learnt every day eh?

Mai: You remove when cutting as it's quite brittle. You could eat it, but I wouldn't.
Katy: golden syrup will work...it just won't produce a light colour. But if you were doing say, dark blue, it would work. Try making peanut brittle with it...dead easy, and sooooo good....

Thanks June for the info.  Problem is, I don't think we have corn syrup over here and I don't know what a substitute would be.  We have syrup, but it's golden.  Might have to google alternatives!

Aha... Interesting! So when cutting the cake, do you remove it, or is it cut with the cake??
