Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I made this cake for a gathering in memory of a dear friend whose dream it was to work at the giraffe sanctuary in Palm Desert, CA when she retired. Sadly she passed away before realizing that dream. A plaque (an edible one replicated on the cake) was installed at a ceremony in her memory Nov. 12, 2011 at the sanctuary. The cake was 36 inches high! See more photos of the cake in my photos. Cereal treat neck and head, fondant covered, entire body is chocolate cake, edible flowers, edible image plaque. Armature attached to board for neck. This cake was very large. I seem to enjoy the engineering of unusual cakes, as I am an artist who just occasionally makes cakes. It's an edible form of sculpture. A bit different than handling clay, but gratifying non the less. Added later..I forgot to mention that no one wanted to cut into the cake at the gathering, and it ultimately ended up at Miller Children's Hospital here in Long Beach California.

This is awesome! I'll bet your clay figures are equally as beautiful, if not more, since it is the medium you are used to working with.
