Karena,

I have never done a contest, but that's a great idea.  I do drawings sometimes, where I have a gift basket with some of my extra Wilton products and if they sign up for the next class by a certain time, they get their name in the drawing for a chance to win the basket. They love it!

I am an instructor at Michaels in Markham,Canada. We have a mandatory demo dates specified by our supervisor, which is a great way to introduce the classes to the shoppers. While doing the demo,I keep all the student kits and books on the table and also I have made a portfolio of cakes made by my students in the last classes of the courses. That is what really brings in the students, because for them our decorations don't make sense, we are taken as experts and student cakes get the attention.Hope that helps.

Wow! Some great ideas!  I love Nasreen's idea of bringing pics of past students' cakes to demo days!

The past few weeks for me have been a bit of a blur! After starting my Michael's classes, I found out that I'm expecting! Very exciting news, however, after much deliberation, I realized that trying to juggle a full-time job plus teaching was just going to be way too difficult for me right now- I'm having trouble staying awake for my 8-10 hour days as it is! So, unfortunately, I've had to give notice that I won't be able to offer any more classes at this time. And I was sooooo excited to start, too!!! But, have to take care of my health and family first and foremost. Maybe in the future I will be able to continue.

Congratulations!! You can always come back to teaching. But your family comes first, and children grow up too fast!

Hello everybody! My name is Darla, and I've been a WMI at Michaels for 4 years, and I recently picked up our local Hobby Lobby as a second account. I'm glad I found this group.

Hello Fellow Wilton Instructors,

For those of us who teach at Michaels, have you noticed our pay was reduced for the Kakes for Kids class.  Whats up with that????  Wilton dropped Kakes for Kids and replaced it with Super Cakes for Kids.  I have read the course curriculum and it is virtually the same class the only difference is our pay was cut from $74 to $60!!!!  I have questioned my Wilton supervisor and she said the pay cut came from Michaels Corporate.  I am wondering what other Michaels instructors think about this.  Is this the first of future pay cuts?  I wonder if Michaels Corp. understands the time and out of pocket expense we spend.  Paper work, baking prep, cost of baking samples for demos and classes.  Prices for butter, sugar, Crisco, cake mixes and utilities keep rising.
