Hi All,

I am wondering if any of you have an alternative to Almond extract and Vodka to make gumpaste look shiny.

Just a note : I also posted this question on the main page discussion board an hour ago and no one has responded, yet. Hope you all can help.

Del - I'm not an expert, but there are people on this site who are.  Gail (artdeco) knows about these things for sure.  I think she and others steam their gumpaste.  If you haven't got a steamer, I understand you hold it over the steam of a kettle.  I have used edible clear lustre spray and find that gives a nice sheen, but not very shiny.  Also rubbing crisco over it helps.  Hope you get more replies from more knowledgeable folk than I!

you can buy spray cans or bottles of glaze.

global sugar art has an edible glaze spray that ishowing to cost about $16.

or there is confectioners glaze.  I see recipes when i googled.

I steam it, just for a second  - either with a boiling pan of water (if the gumpaste is something wired and small) or the steam setting on my iron.

Thanks guys. I will look.

@ Katy, I have tired steam but still not the same glassy effect I am hoping to make my flowers. Although, I have not tried to use crisco on top.

@ Tammy, Thanks for that info. I will deffinately have to buy some of that. Unfortunately, it will not arrive in time to have my flowers done before the wedding. But I did order some, striaght from PME and it is only $9.99 a can. You both are life savers.

I just use my steam iron!! :) I had bought a steamer, worked one time only.....so I went back to using my good ol' iron.

No I don't bc when it dry u will not c anything. I use stream, that makes it look shiny for both fondant work n Gumpaste work. Either use a pot with little water n cover it when ready uncover the pot n stream ur flowers. I also use my iron, that have a stream button. When I use fondant on cake I use the stream from my iron. My little secret that I'm sharing with u! Happy baking;-)

Hi Del ~ I normally paint with Vodka or lemon extract.  To shine, I would put on a tea kettle and once it boils, I wave the flower over it several times at a distance.  You don't want to get too close or it will dampen the flower and it will start wilting.  I have not used luster glaze but I hear it's good.  Good luck!

Steaming it is the best way as far as I know.  I use a clothes steamer, but a kettle as well as a steam iron will also do, Just be careful of holding it in the steam for  to long.  Thin pieces might lose shape or droop.

i purchased a small hand held steamer for $10.00 at amazon.com.  i steam the whole cake (as seen in my Sponge Bob pic), the cake will remain shinney.
