Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hello!  I have just recently started a custom cake/cupcake business with the urging of friends.  I love to bake and decorate, but am struggling with how to package large quantities of cupcakes and cookies.  I have an order for 200 cupcakes coming up.  I have 14x10" size boxes/inserts to hold a dozen, but is there a box/insert combo that holds more than that?

If anyone knows of different club I should be asking, please let me know!

Thanks!  Heather

Yes, you can find separators online that fit in your boxes. I believe they have them for up to 24 cupcakes. When I have large orders like that, I go to Sam's club and get a 10-pack of the disposable aluminum pans. They hold 28-30 cupcakes a piece, and are only $6. I don't use a separator I just gently put them in and leave a gap big enough to get your hand in and get them out easily. They are also deep enough that I can put aluminum foil over the top and it not touch them. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for replying!  Do your cupcakes not move around much without dividers?  Have you found a distributor that holds the 24?  All I've found are the 12 hole inserts.  I was thinking on using 2 of those, shaving a little off each edge and using the half sheet box, but I'm worried if the box will support the weight well enough.  I am not going to be at the setup of this display.  I have to rely on the carefulness of others!  Yikes!  Not easy for a control freak.  :)

The boxes with the separators can get very expensive - make sure you work out the costs to see what proportion of each cupcake is going "to pay for" the box.  There are decorating techniques that are not compromised if the cupcakes touch (for example not piping all the way to the edge).  See what works for you but you need to think like a business owner and not just like a cake person.

I don't really have problems with them sliding, but I do pack them in there tight. I also usually don't ice my cupcakes all the way to the edge. I believe that you can get the 24 at either sugarcraft.com or at globalsugarart.com. :)

Thanks ladies.  Thinking like a business person is harder than I thought.  I just want to make people smile.  :)  Appreciate all the advice.

These were only 35 cents a pc. and fit into a full sheet box.  http://selfservebaker.com/decoratingsupplies/index.php?main_page=pr...

I need some of these just for all the cupcakes I bake for my sons school!

Where are you from? I have gone to Sam's Club and purchased cases of sheet cake boxes for very cheap back in the bakery. Anything that Sam's uses for their baked items in their bakery are for sale to anyone else, so you might want to check out how they package their cupcakes and see if this would work for you. I don't know if all Sam's stores do this or just the one in our area, but the boxes are way cheaper than any I have found any where else.

Hi Pamela - have you ordered from there before?

Linda - I will definitely check out Sam's club.  We're near Cedar Rapids, IA.  I had forgotten that I'd asked them about boxes a while back and they told me they sell them in bulk.  At the time, I only needed one, but that's changed now.  Thanks for the reminder!  Bonus - no shipping charges!

Heather, I live in Council Bluffs, Iowa and I didn't know about Sam's bulk boxes until I was at the store where I purchase most of my decorating needs, and they just happened to be out of all their boxes! It was right at graduation time. The clerk that was waiting on me told me to check at Sam's. She had worked there for years in the bakery there and she told me that whatever you see on the shelves that Sam's uses for their own packaging, is also available for all Sam's customers. I ended up ordering a case of sheet cake boxes along with the card board inserts. It all ended up being way cheaper than what I would have paid at my cake decorating store, although I did have to buy bulk. But my big sheet cake box ended up only costing me about 80 some odd cents per box, and that was for the biggest sheet. I need to check out their 12" square boxes since that is the size I use most. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

When I have gotten really busy and found myself in a pinch with no time, I have also purchased their 5 gallon bucket of white butter cream. It usually runs around $32.00 for a five gallon bucket.  I'm pretty sure they carry the whipped icing too. I haven't purchased any, but the clerk also told me that you can purchase cakes already baked and ready to ice, too. They use Duncan Hines cake mixes and they come in a bulk case, but I don't know how many come in a case. I like to bake my own so have never purchased any.

Hi, I live in England, & when I have large orders I go off to Costco (local wholesalers) they always have loads different size empty boxes (which are all food safe because thats what they already had in them) here is a picture of how I packaged my last bulk order. Hope this helps

The last time I went into Sam's and asked if I could buy boxes from them I was told they no longer do that (about 2 months ago). :(  That might just be at my particular location in Wisconsin, however.

I have used a half-sheet box and 4 of the 6 cupcake inserts to make a 24 pack. If you worry about the bottom, you can put one of the plain 14 x 19 cake boards in the bottom and it supports the cupcakes very well.
