Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

hi everyone.  Hopefully someone can advise me here.  I'd like to try putting a fondant star onto wire and place on a cake for christmas.  But when reading about this in a book i have it says you've not to put the wire straight into the cake, you've to put something on the bottom of the wire, so you can still eat the cake.  Is this correct? And what is it you put on the base of the wire? I know you can't eat the star on the wire, seeing as you've pushed it onto the wire.  So can someone give me advice here.  Thanx in advance x

I always wrap my wires with floral tape...some ppl, I read, use the floral tape with the wire then cover the wire with modelling chocolate when inserting  into the cake...

hope that helps :

We use the florist wire that you can buy from cake supply shops and just push it straight into the cake - I don't think there is a problem doing it.  My kids would also eat the star - but they just love fondant :)

thanx ladies.  the wires that i bought are florist wire, so that means i can place them straight into the cake.  thats great, cos really want to try having wires coming out of the cake, as its something i've not done yet. x ;D

I use coffee stirrers, and put my wires inside them. The stirrers also helps, so the wire doesn't rip through the cake. :-)

Amanda...they have wrapped and unwrapped florist wires...make sure it is wrapped with florist tape..

Just had wee look at the wires & they are covered in a white covering, kind of paper like. Does that sound safe enough 2 use straight in2 the cake?

I've dipped my wires in candle wax before.

yes Amanda...those sound wrapped and should be ok...:)

When I took the Wilton flower class, we learned that we could use dried spaghetti instead of wire for some flowers.  Perhaps that would work as well!  Just a thought!

Hi Amanda

When placing edibles on wire into a cake I use a straw. I push the straw in the appropriate spot on the cake and then I place the wired decoration into the straw. The decoration is held in place with pieces of RKT to hold the in place. The RKT acts as glue.....................LOL

I hope this was helpful................

ooh. a straw is a really good idea! can try this weekend. thx!

The reason for not putting wires straight into your cake is , that the paper covererd ones can loose their paper in the fondant or in the cake , and the wires may rust if in there too long !!

Using a straw is a perfect solution , you can buy on line holders that you push in place first then put the wire into the holders .

A piece of modeling paste could also be used , then decorated with small flowers or piped on to cover .
