For those of you that don't know, it is currently illegal in NJ to sell home-baked goods.  Like TX (much thanks to Kelley for all her help!!), FL, CA, WA State, IL, and I'm sure there are probably a few others out there, NJ Home Bakers are working hard to have their state pass a bill that will legalize the sale of home-baked goods.  If you're not sure about your state, a good way to find out is from a cake-based website (such as this one) and/or a Google search.

Back in 2009, a friend and I decided we wanted to do something about the lack of a Cottage Food Law in NJ and did manage to get a bill introduced which, unfortunately, eventually died in Committee.  This time around, we have another bill (actually it's basically the same bill with a new number) in Senate and we're expecting a companion bill in the Assembly next month or June.  I did a bit of research and received a lot of help and information from Kelley of Texas and I'm very hopeful that with all the other states that are working to pass similar bills, and those that have recently had bills signed into law or are about to (Michigan and Arizona, respectively), that our legislators will realize this is a good thing for constituents and the state as a whole.  Please, if you haven't done so already, write to your legislators and let them know that you want this.  We need your help and support.  Thanks.

Dear fellow stay at home mom bakers (in the state of Texas),

Currently the governor of Texas has a bill (SB 81) sitting on his desk that would allow bakers in the state of Texas to sell their baked goods directly to the consumer, so long as proper labeling is applied.

Please - if you want to see this pass (or even if it doesn't effect your personally but you can spare 30 seconds of your time) go the the governor's contact page and write a message or call and tell the staff member who takes messages, that you want the governor to sign SB 81.

Here's the info you need to contact the governor's office. Thank you so much.

Call the governor and leave a message to sign "SB 81". 1-800-252-9600.
Or email a message thru the web page http://governor.state.tx.us/contact/contact.aspx

Hello Everyone!! Just found this website last night and so glad I did. It is awesome!! I am a sahm to 3 boys. I have always dabbled in cake decorating but just got serious 4 years ago. I went to baking and pastry school. I graduated last year and started decorating cakes for friends. Things have really taken off for me and I have been busy consistently since Jan 2010. It sometimes gets hard being at home and trying to make cakes and take care of family. My husband is very supportive and helps out as much as he can.

Hey Everyone!  I am new to the group, my name is Ck; owner/baker of a .com Specialty Cupcaker by the name of The Cavity Shoppe "Where the fillings are Sweet" and I am self-taught with little training.

I wanted to join this group because I at times do work out of my home since I am licensed and certified to do so.  Want to vibe with other @hone mothers/bakers.  I am in the Staten Island area in NYC

I am a SAHM in Alabama, whose passion is baking and now it's decorating cakes. I would like it to take a step further by starting the cake business from home. Can anybody help me out how I should go about, which means would i have to apply for some license, does the law in Alabama allow home bakers to bake and sell cakes. Totally ignorant. Would love to have some suggestions from fellow home moms ;0

Thanks,

Naheed

Hello everyone! I am New to this site, and i was excited when i found it off facebook. I have been baking ever since i was a teenager, so that was like 14 years ago. Now i'm trying to expand my creativity and my passion for baking. I've been decorating cakes, cupcakes,ect.. for 7 years now, i'm teaching the art of cake deco as a wilton instructor.. I LOVE IT!! I have my own bakery business from my home.  But would love to have a building to do what i love. It can be a hassel and your family kitchen will turn to a full bakery and you can become very stress from that.. so i'm thinking about working out of a commerical kitchen until i can get that building i want...
