Amateur cake decorators

This is for cake decorators that are just starting off. I see a lot of professionals but I want to know about those that haven't got to that point yet. From the looks of my cakes I still have a long way to go. Can anyone relate.

This silcone fondant mat is so wonderful for a beginner cake decorator. I used it today and it made it so easy to cover a 10" x 10" x 5" inch square cake with fondant. I don't think I could have done…Continue

To Vivian Thiele .. Great to hear you're loving your courses! As for ideas .. maybe you can decorate a cake with flowers and cachous. There was 1 time i had to make a cake for sis-in-law's gandma on short notice. All i did was put silver cachous on the "quilt" pattern and just a fondant ribbon. I just kept the whole thing white.

Hi, I'm currently living in Van Buren AR. I began doing the Wilton at home cakes for family members a few years back and really have developed an interest and enjoyment in decorating cakes. I love to bake and being creative so I'm looking to take my hobby into a profession!

Hi All! I have to make a 40th wedding anniversary cake for my in-laws. There are going to be 16-20 people celebrating. How much cake do I need?

I was thinking of making a simple, white MMF covered cake with flowers in their wedding colours. Any other ideas would be great!

Hi Dia, 8" round can feed up to 20.

Hi everyone, my name is Jacqueline. I grew up and live in Manitoba, Canada. I started my cake decorating as a teen. However, just last year, friends and family got me making cakes for them on a regular basis for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Mother's Day, etc. Still, I'm not a professional even though friends have admired my cake decorating skills and creativity.

Though, I would like to learn more about sugar coating, gum paste, and other advanced techniques. Maybe as "amateurs" we can help each other!! :)
I look forward to communicating with some of yous. Thank you!

Hello, Yvette i am just starting out and it is very addictive. I do want to take the Wilton classes when I get the chance but that's probably as far as I will go. Keep following your dream. I don't think you have lost your marbles. They are right where they need to be. Lol.

Hi. I'm new here. I took cake decorating as a 4-H project many years ago, then took one wilton class about 5 years ago and have been just learning on my own since. I would only do about a cake a year but this past year I've done a probably 20 or so, and I'm trying to improve my skills and learn new techniques. I'd appreciate any feedback on the cakes I have in my album. Excited to learn new stuff here!

I have started trying to make and decorate cakes since February, now I have finished 2 of the Wilton Cake Decorating classes, and happy to learn a lot, but I still need to learn MORE! Please see some of the pics I added to my profile...I need to load more, but these are within the last 2 months.

Hi Everyone! Greeting from the beautiful Cayman Islands! I'm new to the site, and new to cake decorating! I've been doing dessert cakes for years - following in the steps of all of the women in family who are known for their culinary skills. Recently, I've decided to give professional cake decorating a try, and now I'm addicted. My dessert cakes have been a side business of mine for a while, but now with my new found skills - I'm trying to expand! I'm completely self taught - simply because we don't have any wilton instructors here in the Cayman Islands, however, I hope to take some wilton courses in the near future during my vacations to the US. I love looking at other's people cake masterpieces, and feel free to look at the cakes on my profile - I'd love to hear feedback!

Hi Barb ~ what do you mean when you say "last are of the cake where I have a lot of fondant left from smoothing it that wants to make a fold." Are you talking about the bottom half?
