Amateur cake decorators

This is for cake decorators that are just starting off. I see a lot of professionals but I want to know about those that haven't got to that point yet. From the looks of my cakes I still have a long way to go. Can anyone relate.

Fondant Mat

This silcone fondant mat is so wonderful for a beginner cake decorator. I used it today and it made it so easy to cover a 10" x 10" x 5" inch square cake with fondant. I don't think I could have done…Continue

Yeah I tried the viva paper towel affect but it didnt work for me. I have yet to try the paint roller but I really do want to that.

I can not find Viva towels here so what I did was found a smooth paper dinner napkin (had to iron the fold lines out) and it made smoothing Buttercream so simple and fast. I also have tried the sponge rollers but I always seem to go back to the paper napkin.

My first post...like some of you-I don't know which way to go! I don't do cakes FT, I work a "regular" Job, and I am also a certified wedding planner. I started doing cakes to be more flexible in the wedding/event planning industry, and because I knew it would take a while to get it going. So it was to be a filler, so to speak. But I'm pretty good, and I love doing it! I've taken the first two Wilton courses, and plan on taking the 3rd one in March. I do mostly butter cream, but have used fondant for 3D pics on my cakes.
I have a bridal show this coming Sunday, so I made a 3 tier wedding cake to display. I didn't do dummy cakes-I have never done a wedding cake (tiered, anyway) and I wanted to do it, because I DO have one for next month and in June, and I didn't want my first one do be on a customer.
Anyway, just wanted to say hello! Look forward to "chatting"' with everyone!

Its interesting to hear of all the solutions offered but I live in a super humid country and the buttercream hardly 'sets' in this weather. But i will give the viva towels a shot (If I can get hold of them) and the suggestion on the rollers is interesting.. will post my results...

Hello, this is my first post. I have been baking for years, but have only recently gotten into decorating cakes. I have only done a few cakes so far but I really like doing it. I am in the middle of the Wilton cake decorating class part 1 so far. I plan on continuing with all the classes.

I've used Viva, and it works pretty good-but another option is using wax paper. I have a small roller I got from Pampered Chef that I use with it. Give that a try!

I have wax paper and never thought about using it to smooth a cake.
