Amateur cake decorators

This is for cake decorators that are just starting off. I see a lot of professionals but I want to know about those that haven't got to that point yet. From the looks of my cakes I still have a long way to go. Can anyone relate.

Bonnie...we are in the early stages of planning a bakery biz...right now I am mastering my recipes...baking and taste testing them all.  ( I send them to work with my boyfriend and his fellow employees are my guinea pigs!)  Anyway, I have 90% of  business plan done as well.  There are tons of books that guide u in the process!  Good luck.  Would love to share ideas!

Hi everyone. I'm from Texas.  I loved watching the cake shows and decided to take the Wilton classes.  I got a job working at the local grocery store bakery and now I am definately hooked.

I don't know if any one else has tis problem but I get all these ideas and designs in my head for different cakes but when I try to put them on paper the get lost in translation. I am not an artist so drawing is not my strong suit but I would still like to be able to get presentable rough drafts down on paper. Do any you have advice on how a non-artisit can still get presentable pictures on paper that don't look like chicken scratches?

Hi everyone.  I'm new to this particular group but I thought you all might be interested in my giveaway because its for amateur bakers (most of my readers are just starting out in the baking world).  Anyway, its a good chance to win gift certificates to cake supply stores if anyone is interested.  After all, doing cakes is an expensive hobby :) http://sugarturntable.com/?p=706

Hi, I m from Newark, NJ and have always loved baking...not cooking.   I have also taken the Wilton classes like many but I also have just finished take classes in Baking Proficiency to prepare me for a career in baking and/or to start my own business.  I am not an artist but when I start thinking up what I want to do I can draw it out then actually baking and shaping is when I get nervous.   As my husband says I am my own worse critic..... lol

How many of you are using marzipan under your fondant?  I am considering taking this route since sometimes my fondant is not perfect on the sides.....
