Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I think I'm going to get a set of the Wilton calla lily formers this weekend -- I have been on a tight budget and it's been a hot summer so I haven't done much with cakes. Wondering if anyone else has tried the calla formers and how you liked them, were they easy to work with, etc.

I took the last of the Wilton classes right before they switched the format to 3 classes instead of 4, and the calla lily formers weren't in the older kits.

I was looking at them too, but I like my flowers more free form..most of the calla lilies look alike with those formers...I've been using styrofoam cones..they come in different sizes..I just happened to have them...I covered them with plastic wrap then put some shortening on them..so the callas come off easier...I can make different size flowers on them.. I also saw somewhere to use the cone-shaped drinking cups, but I would think the flowers would be small on them..Did you try to find some coupons for the wilton set?
Bunny,

I used them to make the Calla Lilies on the wedding cupcakes I did and they worked GREAT. I was very pleased with the results. The way I did the middles and stem was to form the middle out of yellow fondant on a lollipop stick blank, let it set, then wet it with water and rolled it in yellow sanding sugar. Then I passed it through the lily and formed green fondant around the stem and up onto the outer edge of the bottom of the lilly. Here's a link to the finished lilies:

Good luck!
I have used them and they are easy and make nice flowers. To make each on different looking you can curl the ends different on each one so they don't match exactly. I don't make the center as thick as wilton recommends because it doesn't look real enough.
I am a Wilton Instructor and been using the formers since we switched. They are nice, when I learned in the classes we used a snow cone cup so it is kinda nice to have something that you use over and over again. My students seem to like having them as well. My only suggestion would be to make sure that your fondant has just a touch of dusting powder on it because they stick really easy to that smooth plastic and so they can be a bit of a pain to try and get off later. It is just a FYI, you might find you don't have any problems. Hope you enjoy them.
Great comments everybody! Thanks for the tips on using dusting powder -- sugar or cornstarch or does it matter?

Also about making the lilies a little different and the center not too big. I'll remember that. I got them Saturday and washed them and going to look through my "scrap stash" of fondant/gumpaste for stuff to play with.
I make my own formers out of paper! And have reused them several times. I use a tag board weight and roll them kind of like a parchment bag. Works great!
I had one cone that cae with the fondant kit and zI used it last week to make about 40 calla lilies in about an hour including cutting out the heart shapes....it is so easy and they set up in about 2 minutes with the gumpaste recipe I use and I placed them in egg cartons to dry.....here is a pic
