Are you talking about the Sweetwise Mat?  If it is the Sweetwise mat, then all you have to do is treat it for the first time. Rub some Shortening on both mats, then lightly rub most of it off with a soft towel(lint free).  You will love this mat...it is as good as they show on the You tube video.  I have two sets and they have been my best toy. I have used mine many times now and not once have I had problems covering a large cake with fondant.  I was the worse at moving fondant with the rolling pin.
Yes that is The Mat.. Thank you...I am looking forward to using it...
I just bought one. I am waiting for it to get here so I can play with it.
The Mat is awesome. I had so much trouble rolling fondant and sugarpaste and what not on the cakes and it always turned out messy! I couldn't seem to get it off from the marble.
Then came the Mat and Et Voila! - Perfection! ("Perfection" pronounced like a real frenchman^^)

Well, you can rub some lard/butter on the mats, but I noticed it has to be spread evenly, else the lard will stick to the Icing.
Most mats don't need to be prepared that way. Just dump the icing, roll it and VOILA!:)
Good luck!

Here's a good e-book I found to be very helpful in my cake-decorating adventures. Good tips and valuable info on how to get the cake looking just PERFECT with ideas and advice to Ice cakes for a variety of occasions!
