I have no experience with it but my gut feeling is no.  When the ice cream softens the extra moisture will melt the fondant.
That is what I am thinking, but if I used some off that hard shell stuff in a bottle...

That stuff sweats so I really don't think it's going to work.  But give it a try.
fondant has to be at warmed state to use, the cold temperature of the ice cream even covered with something will be a bad idea.  Im not sure you will like the taste combination iether. But if you use a base coat of butter creme icing it can be done. Freeze the ice cream cake with a base coat of butter creme icing to a really frozen state. Then you will have about 10 minutes to make the cake before you have to refreeze it again. Good luck
Thank you . Do you or soem body else knows what the icecream stores frost thier cakes with?

yes, I do know, commercial butter creme or any home made icing should work. Easy on the shorting. Hope that helps.

yes, I do know, commercial butter creme The company  work for has a base called smooth and light add 2 pounds of water and you have the best base icing, add any flavor you want or color it works great. Or any home made icing should work. Easy on the shorting. Hope that helps.

I think you can, but I have no idea what you have to do to make it work!  I just saw today that the local TCBY did an icecream wedding cake - covered and decorated in fondant.  Don't know how they did it, but it was a really cute cake, so obviously it is doable!  I think they may have used a cake/icecream combo - where the icecream is sandwiched in between to layers of cake, but that is just me guessing!  HTH.
I wouldn't do it. Once the ice cream starts to melt, the fondant will slide off.
I did forget to say the cake will be cake and then icecream layer in side. So it will be three reg cake and 2 icecream layers in between. Maybe even 1/2 inch layer of the icecream maybe crunch up cookies between the icecream and cake.. What do you think can it work this way? If not I will just do buttercream..Thank you all for your help..
