My husband's niece would like me to ship a cake out to her up north. Has anyone ever shipped a fondant covered cake?

We had this conversation several months back and it didn't sound like people had good results shipping cakes. I wouldn't go there!
I think it would be very expensive. I wouldn't take the chance either.
Having grown up in and around the airline industry, I can tell you that baggage handlers are NOT careful, even when it says fragile. Nope No way. Those companies that do ship cakes, like dessert of the month club...those things are shipped out frozen and thaw in transport and I have seen some of them on arrival...not pretty. and fondant is not partial to being frozen. A gift certificate to a local bakery sounds like a better choice.
Hey just say no haha I tried to ship a cake from MS to TX and it was totally scrambled when it got there. then I tried to ship Petit fours from My hometown of Laurel MS to the coast and they were scrambled also. I think we need to do as Theresa Suggested and start a system like FTD for flowers who knows maybe it will be the latest craze
Is that what they looked like before shipping and or after?

:)

I only ship cookies! I have shipped fondant covered cupcakes from california to new york before and they actually made it in tact and in one piece :) I just put them in those airtight clear cupcake containers put saran wrap over the cupcakes tightly and closed the lid on the saran wrap so it was tight and snug and if the box got dumped over they wouldn't fall out of the holes and be messed up. Then I got the long medium flat rate box from usps. wrapped the cupcake container in bubble wrap slid it into the box and it was snug. It seemed to be fine and got to new york in 2 days :) and cost 11.40 with tracking. Below are the picture of the cupcakes.
Thanks for all your replies!
Tanisha where do you buy your cupcake containers?
