I usually make my own fondant, but making black is so time-consuming, and red is almost impossible.  Wilton's red has that funky chemical taste nobody likes, so I don't use that unless I have to.

Can anyone recommend a brand of black and/or red fondant that doesn't taste funky?  Also - if you buy the fondant in those tubs, how long does it last?  Does it need to be refrigerated after you open it? I don't have a sheeter either, so I need something that is easy to knead and roll out with a rolling pin.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I've never purchased fondant but Satin Ice seems to be the favorite. Stored at room temp it lasts a pretty good while.

Do you have an Ateco fondant mat? It is one of my favorite toys. Second only to my new stand mixer
I do not have an Ateco fondant mat! How big is it? Why do you love it? Right now I just dust the countertop with powdered sugar/cornstarch mix when rolling out fondant.

GSA has the Satin Ice fondant on sale, so I may order small tubs of each the red and the black to see how it is. I'm doing a ladybug cake in April - so at least I'll have a use for them! :)
Mine is 24 x 40 I think. I roll out the fondant, pick up the mat, lay it over the cake, peel off the mat. Reduces stretching and tearing. Everyone says you don't have to use PS or cornstarch but I use a slight amount of shortening to keep my fondant from sticking.

Check Jesters for fondant also - www.fondantsource.com
I just heard that some Michaels are carrying Duff's new brand of fondant and they carry red and black. But, not every Michael's is offering it yet, so you'll have to check by your local ones. With a 50% coupon you could get a decent price and from what I've heard the taste is pretty good. I haven't tried it yet myself though, so I can't give you my opinion.
Thanks for the info. I'll have to check it out.
Well, I went ahead and ordered red and black from GSA - the Satin Ice brand. My problem is that I can never order just one or two things from them! LOL. I ended up getting some leaf cutters and teardrop cutters and petal dust too.

Our closest Michael's is over an hour away. :( I have their cake aisle memorized, but was just there a week ago so it'll be a few weeks before I go back. I'll have to look for Duff's stuff next time I'm there, though.
I use Satin Ice all the time and keep a bucket of each color on hand all the time. I LOVE the red and black However... be sure to wear gloves when working with the black. I buy the surgical gloves from the pharmacy because they fit your fingers tight. I just did a wedding cake in all black fondant at Christmas and it was amazing. The black is tricky to work with. I put my gloves on and then rub crisco on them (only when using the black to cover a cake) then work the fondant that way. It will stain your mat if you do not clean it off right away. The red is wonderful too but with both the red and black the Aetco mat is the ONLY way to go. I never use anything on my mat at all. I just put the mat on the table and it sticks to the table so it does not move around while you are rolling your fondant. Then I flip the mat over onto the cake and peel it off. Be careful with it because everything sticks to it and you do not want to clean it with a sponge or anything with lint because it will stick to the mat. I use clorox wipes to clean it then hang it to air dry and roll it up to store it in the plastic box it comes in. I have 2 mats and love them. You can go to Satin Ice's website and down load a color chart that tells you how much of each color to mix to get different colors. If I am making a pale color I usually use gel paste and mix it in to the white but if you want the vibrant colors... Satin Ice is the best in my book! I think the shelf life is supposed to be 6 months. I have some that I have had longer that I only use for things that will not be consumed such as flowers etc. If it gets a bit hard, just pop it into the microwave for 10 seconds and it will soften right up... but .. be sure you do NOT have it in a plastic bag when you do that! I had some blue that was a bit hard and was using it for a cookie monster so I left it in the zip loc bag had the bag open put the microwave on for 10 seconds and took it out and started to knead it while it was in the bag....DUMB DUMB DUMB! The plastic and the fondant burned to my hand and I had a nice blister out of that. OUCH!
