Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

HI everybody!

So I am making a 3d carved cake this week.  I am new to rolled fondant, so I am looking for a way to get a nice smooth finish.  I'm having a go at Suzi Toms Giraffe cake - yummy!

Would I be able to use a poured fondant over a 3d shape for the base coat or would it slide off?

THANKS!

this cake is so cute.
This is a rolled fondant...if you pour fondant over it, it would look like a huge petit four and drip down the sides...basically it would be a disaster. This cake isnt for beginners in rolled fondant but it is very cute. I would suggest you get some practice in with some plain round cakes first to get the feel of working with it. And it depends what type you are going to use. Wilton works great but it doesnt have the best taste. Marshmallow fondant tastes great but it may take a try or 2 to get the recipe right. You could try SatinIce fondant which you buy at supply houses online.

Some tips for using fondant:

Knead fondant to soften it...you canput it in the microwave BUT for only 5-10 seconds depending how big your hunk is. If you heat more than that the sugar crystals will melt and you will never recover it. Use a flat surface like a table with a non stick surface like formica or use a rolling mat. Dust with powdered sugar when rolling out. Make sure you roll it evenly and not any thiner than 1/4 inch......

Prepare the cake properly by applying a crumb coat of frosting evenly over the cake first, then refrigerate to chill it and firm it up. Then you can lay the fondant over the cake. Make sure you rollout the fondant larger than the surface of the cake. For instance if you have an 8" cake which is 3" high you add the height of both sides plus the width across plus 2" extra: 3+3+8+2=16" wide circle of fondant that will be more than enough. After you drape the cake with the rolled fondant take your hands and smooth the fondant over the cake starting with the top and then smooth down the sides. Trim off the excess even with the cakeboard.

Here is a very good video on youtube that shows exactly how to do this

I hope that helps
