Diana are you covering a cake or making a figure with the plaid?
If I were doing plaid I'd probably hand paint it. Just get a photo of what you want... or Luck's has some edible images that are plaid... much easier.
Funny you should ask, I just printed out this great tutorial earlier today. Now this is done with an airbrush, but maybe if you used a stencil and dusting powder thinned with alcohol you could hand paint it by allowing each layer of color to dry completely before starting the next. I am thinking ahead to my son's birthday in November because he is a Campbell on his father's side of the family and a McKenzie on my side.
