Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Newbie: Hi was wondering if anyone has ever tried Duffy's fondant available at Michaels??

Hi guys!

Thsi is my first time in this community...glad to be a part of it..

I have just enetered this crazy and obsessive cake decorating world and have been using Satin Ice rolled fondant for decorating but I got an email from michaels.com and they announcned their new line of Duff (from Ace of Cakes) fondant and icing. has anyone ever used it??

Rumor has it that it is actually Fondarific who is the manufacturer but Duff is the label..Maybe you have used fondarific ....if yes.. how was it??

thanks again

I must agree wtih all the posts about his fondant being extremely overpriced; however, if you use a Michael's 40 or 50% off coupon than you cut the cost in half. That still leaves you at 5.00 a pound which is pretty pricy. His brown fondant is the one I use. It tastes exactly like a tootsie roll and works like velvet. It doesn't crack or crumble, is extremely smooth and goes twice as far as Michael's alternative; however, Chocopan, Satin Ice and others mentioned are also excellent. Duff's neon pink and black are also exceptional for their color quality and taste like a vanilla tootsie roll; again though, you are paying so much for his name. It would not be worth it without the 40 or 50% off. Keep on Michael's mailing list. Using his jet black and rolling it on a mat covered in shortening rather than corn starch or confectioner's sugar really gives you a beautiful black shiny cake and the neon pink is just hard to find in that bright a color, but you can make it; however, that's time consuming. If you are going to airbrush it anyway to the color you want than it wouldn't be worth it just for the color, as I said, I like the brown as it tastes different than the other colors and better than most. Good luck
Black and red are really hard to achieve however it can be done with powdered food color. The colors are pure pigment and very intense.. doesn't make the fondant or gumpaste sticky. Just knead in like you would 10X sugar ...keep some shortening to knead in if it gets a little dry. Start small..a little goes a long way. Also here is a link from Candyland Crafts for a color mixing chart. The numbers are parts each like drops. tsps etc. depending on how much you need to color http://www.candylandcrafts.com/colorchart.htm You can find powdered food color at www.fondantsource.com great prices too.
Karen you are the woman..thank you for sharing 2 excellent resources..the color chart guide is very very handy to keep and the supply house is a good source for all things fondant...thank you again:)
