Here is way to accomplish your goal without worry. Roll some gumpaste very smooth to the size of the photo plus about an inch. Let it dry. Then mist slilghtly with vodka or water and attach the centered photo. Now pipe a fancy frame using royal icing. Let the whole thing dry. (Note: don't move it. Let it sit exactly where you cut it until it drys so you don't get wrinkles or bumps in the gumpaste) Once the royal has dried completely, use gold or silver luster dust to color the frame. Now you have an edible framed photograph that can be placed directly on the buttercream that has dimension and beauty! When you are ready to cut the cake, just take it off and set aside. No cutting through your beloved's face - think about it - do you really want to serve you guest a dismembered groom? Congratulations on your wedding! May it be the best day of your life and the start of many more to come!

The edibla images can go on either one with no problems.CONGRATS!!!
Congratulations Samantha! And yes like the other ladies said edible images can go on either...just make sure your buttercream is very smooth before you lay the transfer on.
Congrats! You can put them on either.... I just did a bridal shower cake with edible images on it. It is all fondant but you could very easliy do it on buttercream. I have our bakery at the grocery store print them for me. Saves me from investing in the printer, ink, paper etc.
