Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I was wondering what Isomalt tastes like?  Does it have that artificial sweetener taste?  I'd love to try making some jewels (what little girl wouldn't love some bling on her cake?), but I have some friends who refuse to give their children artificial sweeteners at all (splenda, sucralose, even stevia).  I have to admit I don't give them to my own children either - I'd rather they have a little sugar than a lot of chemicals.

So while the bling may look pretty, is it going to taste good?  Also - I know you can color it - can you add flavoring to it as well? Those are my main questions

The website says it's made from sugar beets.
There is a warning out that the sugar jewels can cause a choking hazard in small children too... Not sure about the taste... I have some but have not used it yet. I was thinking about sugar bottles for it. (our grown boys love their beer!) There are some natural sweetners out... Truvia and Stevia. I use the Truvia and it is really sweet and I like it.

Good to know about the Truvia. I haven't tried it yet. I grew some stevia a couple of years ago. I dried and ground it and gave it the iced tea test. I wasn't impressed.
I have a really hard time with any artificial sweeteners. The aftertaste just turns me off completely. It doesn't matter how many people tell me "it has no aftertaste!" - I can always tell. I just have really sensitive taste buds. I was at Wal-Mart one day and there was a guy handing out samples of some yogurt thing. I looked at the front of the box - no where did it say "light", "diet", or "sugar-free". I asked him if it had artificial sweeteners. He said no. I took one bite, about gagged and asked to look at the ingredient list. Sure enough - succralose. It's really annoying because people don't believe me when I tell them I don't like it and think they can sneak it to me without me knowing. It never works.
