Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I have seen some beautiful wedding cakes with lace piped designs  which look very delicate.

Is a template used to do this  ? or ?

I am interested to hear from anybody who can tell me more!

HI Tanya,

Funny you should ask, I'm just doing this as part of my diploma. What you do is get a design that you like and copy it as many times as you need on a piece of paper. Then put this paper on a board and cover the paper and board with cellophane. (like you would with runouts) Then pipe away!! let them dry, take them off carefully with a tiny pallette knife and stick them to your cake.

You will need to add gum tragacanth to your icing to make it a bit tougher.

Hope this helps!!
Thanks Rach, so a template (drawing ) is required under the cellophane to pipe over this is what I thought so if I have a topper with a lace design it would be an idea to supply a template to match so the cake maker can continue the same design over the cake?
What is a runout?
Tanya
This is only the second time I have heard the term "run out", I want to know what this is too.

Hee hee this cake is a bit of a mess, but it is a cake I decorated to learn how to do runouts. The swans are runouts as are the collar and the base!
This is beautiful!

ahh thanks for all your nice comments :-)
I also have several "Lace" silicone molds that I use... they are on my cakes in my album.
Just so I understand is a run out also called colorflow? Or do you use something else?
Hi Machelle

I'm not sure about that, I've only ever heard it called a runout, but I'm very new to cake decorating so could be wrong :-)......
