Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Okay I was asked today if someone could add a 1/2 sheet of cupcakes to their order. So my questions are: how many cupcakes do you put in a 1/4 sheet, 1/2 sheet, 3/4 sheet, and a full sheet? Also how much do yall charge for this? Do your prices vary if it is just an add on to their cake or do you charge same price as if it was the order? Thanks guys.

Huh? What the heck is a 1/2 sheet of cupcakes? I have never heard of ordering cupcakes by the sheet only by the dozen. I would clarify with the client how many cupcakes they want. The equivalent to a 1/2 sheet cake? And what do they consider a 1/2 sheet... it can mean different things to different people. Now, I don't sell sheet cakes, but to me a full sheet is 18 X 26 (100 2x2" servings), a 1/2 sheet is 12 X 18 (50 servings), and a 1/4 sheet is 9 X 13 (25 servings). If someone asked me for a 1/2 sheet of cupcakes I would be thinking 50 servings or 4 dozen cupcakes... but who knows if that is the same as what they would be thinking. This is why going by size is such a pain in the rear. I only go by amount of servings needed as it is clear as day what they are looking for.

Regardless of that though, definitely charge them the normal price for them. They may be adding it to their present order, but that does not mean they are discounted. I start cupcakes at $3.00 each for a simple swirl.

Hope this helps a little... =]
Well Jeanne thanks for that. I emailed a professional cake decorator friend of mine and she emailed me back simply 35 cupcakes exact. She knew exactally what I was talking about. I see your logic and it makes sense, but I am curious to see what others have to say to weigh in on the subject. Thanks again for your help!!! =)

Could be that we live in very different areas... around here I have never heard of sheets of cupcakes, and I've been in the biz for almost 3 years now. Could also be because I don't make sheet cakes so I'm not familliar with their cupcake equivalents. =]
Ya prob. Who knows. lol

I was wondering about that terminology too!! I have never heard of sheets of cupcakes...it must be a regional thing. Melody if you haven't looked at Jeanne's gallery, do so, she is uber talented and a real source of inspiration!!
I wouldn't think that the typical customer would even have any clue how many cupcakes add up to a half sheet. I've never heard of it either.
I was thinking maybe the customer wanted cupcakes that would equal the same servings as a sheet or half sheet etc... glad she got back with you to clarify it. I charge by the cupcake regardless and I do give discounts on larger ordrers. If they order 100 or more of the same flavor combo I knock off the price... I don't get $3 for one that just has a swirl though... wish I live where you do Jeanne! I charge $1.50 to $2. each and they go up per how they are decorated.
Well ladys I asked my customer what she considered a 1/2 sheet. She said "idk 20-30". So this is what I told her I would do. The cupcakes will be the same flavor as the cake and just a simple white swirl on them with a fondant pink heart thrown on top. I am doing a lamb cake for her and the lambs nose is going to be a pink fondant heart so then they will match. I am charging her $10 a dozen and she ordered 2. My prices are very cheap because well Im still very new and learning. (Heck most of my cakes I did for free, including every single big cake of mine) If you look at my cakes you can tell why. I only took the course 1 Wilton class at my local Hobby Lobby and the rest I am figuring out on my own. Thank you all for your help.

well i'm in the same position as you did one course and learning from research, but i still think you should at least charge for material and tell the clients this, let them know u not going to charge for skill as yet cause you are learning but they need to cover the material cost. cause i think you will always find yourself never profiting from your business and always taking money out from your pocket! and u have good skills n ideas, stop selling urself short girl!!

I think you were very considerate in that you checked out what a half sheet of cupcakes were before you quoted the price. I'm afraid my big mouth would have blurted "dozens, speak to me in dozens! We don't do sheets of cupcakes around here!.." And While reading all the comments, I think I need to up my cupcake prices! Happy cupcaking!
