Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So I went and checked out some of the Duff Goldman products at Michael's yesterday - what they had out.  They were still stocking the shelves and redoing the aisle (thank goodness they still had all the cake circles and bases out - that's what I really needed).  Anyway - my first comment is that the stuff is way expensive - $19.99 for 2 lbs. of colored fondant! And $10.99 for what I think was 2 lbs. of frosting.  The sprays were $4.49.  I did get a can of the silver graffiti spray, but had my daughter buy it and use my 40% off coupon.  I can't attest for the quality, but the prices dos seem a little high. Especially considering you can get 2 lbs. of Satin Ice fondant for under $10 online

I could be wrong but what you think is frosting could be the cake mixes, again, not sure. He has three or four mixes that I saw and the boxes were in different colors. Like you said, they are shifting the shelves around as well as moving the Wilton products around. Some of the items are being moved to the wedding section of the store so keep an eye out for that. Duff is Duff and his name is out there. Even though it's expensive, now Wilton has competition on the shelves. The question is, will Duff's items be sold more because it's his or will Wilton's prices out beat his? Wilton couldn't have changed their classes at a perfect time.
Same thing here the store was a mess and my husband said look check that out that's the guy on TV.... looked at the price and said yup... and he is being paid well for his stardom! The fondant was almost double what I get Satin Ice for... and Duff has always used Satin Ice... you think it is a gimick and Satin Ice is putting a Duff label on their product and selling it for twice the price? Smart marketing if that is the case!!!
Diana - I'm pretty sure it was frosting - it was in tubs and labeled with colors.

Jeri - good question! It's not like he's not making any money on his cakes either. I mean, I know they do AMAZING work, but they don't take any orders under $1000!!! That means, the smallest cake that goes out their door is at least a grand. Crazy!
It will be interesting to see how many people who are just starting out run and buy his stuff just because of the TV thing. It must be better than Wilton anyway and that is all Michael's sells! I don't think I want to invest that kind of money for a taste test! Maybe someone else will let us know how it is. I love Duff and his show but the prices are streatching it. But... if I were in his shoes and could make the extra $$$ that way shoot... I probably would too!
I too like Duff but when I saw his prices, I backed off. I would rather purchase Satin Ice than pay so much for his fondant because his name is on it.
But ladies remember with michaels you can use the 40% off coupons. We only have one store that I am aware of that carries Satin Ice fondant and it is 15.99 for 2lbs. Even though Duff's is 19.99 at least if I wanted that one I could get it for about 11.00 more or less. Wilton is still cheaper for the most part. Wilton has the 5lb for 19.99 also, with the coupon you get it for $11 and change and you get twice as much fondant than either Duff or Satin Ice. You get more for your money with or without a coupon when it comes to wilton at this point. The question that comes to my mind with Duff, Satin Ice, Wilton, Fondurific and any others is who is going to maintain thier quality?
I think I'm going to stick with homemade MMF for the most part - it costs me about $2.50 to make 2.5 lbs. of fondant.
Eileen, does your mmf get hard on the outside once you have covered a cake with it? Also does the sweetness of your mmf intensify? I ask because I have done a few cakes with it and more cookies with mmf than anything; and it seems like as soon as I cover the cake or cookie the mmf gets a little hard and the sweetness really intensifies alot. Am I doing something wrong or is this what happens?

It does get a little hard on the outside, but not crusty hard - you can still slice through it quite easily. I really don't know about the sweetness. I have to admit I've only eaten one of the fondant covered cakes I've done and didn't really notice a difference. I have a sweet tooth, though. :)
I buy my fondant in the 20 lb buckets so don't think I will be looking at Michaels for it. I'd hate to see what 20 lbs of Duff's fondant would cost... and I'd die before I ever use Wilton again. :-)
Our Michaels is openning up on Sat. So I will get to check out the Duff stuff then. It does seem high. But I have a local family business around here that sells the cake supplies and they charge just about that for Satin Ice and other brands. I have never made my own fondant. I am starting to like the premade stuff just because of the clean up is way easier. I am looking forward to having some varity when it comes to products. Wilton really has the retail market cornered in stores.
I was just in Michaels the other day and there really isn't much to Duff's line. I would never bother buying icing, so that doesn't interest me, and if I'm going to buy fondant, I'd rather get it in bulk. Supposedly, Wilton is coming out with a better tasting fondant, but I don't know when.
