Each type has a different finish...
Luster Dust and Shimmer Dust are pretty much the same and they give a bit of a sheen to the finish
Sparkle Dust has a sparkle kind of a very very soft glittery finish without looking like glitter
Petal Dust is more concentrated and the colors are more vibrant
Pearl Dust gives a pearly finish
Metallic Highlihgters are the golds, silvers bronzes that look like a metal finish and most are not ment to be consumed.
Crystal Dust is a lot like petal dust and the colors are very nice.
Can you tell I have invested just a hair bit of $$$$ in dusts??? I have a nice collection. I bought some DVD's and books Nicholas Lodge is the best and they explain how to use them, blend them etc.

There are also higher and lower quality dusts & colorants. The typical dust has a base of talc, which is non-toxic and it helps to stick to the gumpaste. Higher end colors like Crystal Colors use only pure food color and are much more intense.
There are also the Disco Dusts, and there is a difference between the original by Sunflower Sugar Art and the knock off. Sunflower's has a better color to it & more shimmer, it also has less fillers.
Good explanation Jeri.

Unless they have improved them recently the Wilton dusts are not worth the $$!
Save your hard earned $ for the real thing. This is a case of where it is much better to invest the extra money in the best you can afford. As I remember Sunflower Sugar arts is one of those 'best' :)
