Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi all

I'm new to the site - found it today, much to my delight :-)

I'm about to embark on a project to make a cake in the shape of a tent for a family celebration.  It's not a simple frame tent but looks like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/24764178@N08/2580513060/

I wanted to carve the shape out of cake and then decorate over that but I've never done anything like it before.

So I wondered does anyone have any tips for carving shapes from cake?

Thanks in advance!

Vicky

Hi Vicky,

I made my first wonky cake last week, which involved a bit of carving. I used a madiera cake and was told to freeze the cake, then defrost it for an hour before carving it makes it easier to carve....

Sorry that's all ive got, hope it helps :)

Vicky may I suggest stacking a few rectangular cakes maybe 3 high with butter cream in between each layer. Chill the cakes until firm then carve the shape with a sharp serrated knife until you are satisfied.. You may want to draw it out first so you have a plan. Then color fondant in the color of the cake and cut pieces to fit then lay them on the crumb coated cake. Make seams with rolled out ropes and attach them to the edges to cover the seams. You will need a good recipe for a cake that will hold up to carving...like a pound type cake or substitute buttermilk or sour cream to your recipe instead of milk or water...it will make it more dense and moist.
Thanks Rach and Karen Marie. Great advice and I'll let you know how I get on :-)
Cant wait to see!
Oh wow! I can't wait to see what your cake looks like and with all the terrific advice you received I'm sure you will have a fun time making it! Please be sure to post pictures. And do tell what the cake is and flavors too!
Yup, good advice from Karen Marie. You are gonna need a whole load of cake to start with, as a lot of it will get carved away. Remember it takes a lot more to start with than you think it should. And also remember to post pics! Keep us posted and GOOD LUCK!
Tina,
I would like to have your cake recipe please. In fact, I would suggest that you post it under "recipes" in the forum. We can never have too many cake recipes, yellow, white, chocolate, pound etc. etc. etc.
Please let me know when it is posted. Thanks for sharing! Oh would you please make a note on your recipe to tell how many cups of batter or this recipe makes 2 - 8 inch rounds or 4 - 2 inch round pans or 2 - 10 inch round pans - I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to get to if you can please. TIA.

Hi Vicky,
May I also suggest using a pound cake type recipe. I made a circus tent and used a yellow pound cake recipe for the top section and chocolate for the bottom section. I froze the cakes overnight and then the next morning I stacked them and started carving it, that way it holds its shape better. I used 7 layers of cake all together. 3 layers on 1 cardboard (chocolate) 2 layers on the 2nd cardboard (yellow pound cake) and 2 layers on the third cardboard (yellow pound cake) and stacked them one on top of the other with dowels underneath. Hope this makes sense and helps you. If you need a good recipe for a yellow poundcake like cake, let me know. I make mine by scratch. Good luck!
I to would like this recipe,, :)

Well it's a long time since I posted my question about carving a cake for a tent cake I wanted to make and I've finally made it as the family celebration is this weekend.

I think I've managed to upload a picture of it, too, as requested :)

Thanks for the help!
