Butter cream icing melting? just falling off of cake

When I make my butter cream icing it looks so good at first and even crust but if I go back and add a trim etc it melts off just runs off the cake. I am using Edna's recipe and real shortening with trans fat.

Thanks

I was having that problem for awhile.  For my situation, my icing was just too thin and I was placing my border to close to the edge for as thin as the icing was.  HTH!

I thought the same but its not if I put it on then it starts taking the cake off. I wonder if the recipe I am using causing to come off too.

Shanna,

It sounds like your icing is just too thin. I just posted a video yesterday on how we make our buttercream icing and the video mentions where to get our recipe also.

It does sound like it is too thin... however if you get it too thick it will pull your cake apart too...

If you have too much moisture on the cake itself when you apply the icing it can cause it to fall off too.  Just pat the surface of your cake with a paper towel before you apply your icing and see if that helps too.

If you live in a humid area it can cause problems too... lots of possible reasons.

I'm with Jeri,  there are so many factors.  I usually have that problem if there is too much moisture on my cake, which usually happens when I remove the plastic wrap.   I let the cake set for about 30 minutes after unwrapping before I start icing it.  Good luck.  I hope you get your issues resolved.

The first thing I would try is adding less water to the icing.
Thank you everyone.  I do live in a humid and hot area down south. I know sometimes after I ice the cake then I go back to put the boarder which is always the round balls (since I just make it for the kids and thats all I know how to do)the round balls go on realy runny like its melting.

........the border is round balls and go on really runny like it is melting.............

This definately sounds like your icing has much to much liquid in it as everyone suggested.  That and I bet you have hot hands :)

Why don't you post your the recipe exactly as you make it so we can suggest further helps.

I am using Edna's recipe to the T. does anyone have a good one for hot southern weather its gets hot and humid here. thank you everyone.

Not much humidity here so can't help you there!  Hope you find something that works for you!

I live in Texas and I use Sharon Zambitos recipe.  It works like a charm every time.  I have never had a problem with it.  A friend of mine had always had issues with hers using the same recipe.  I finally had her come over and make it at my house.  I stopped her as soon as she took all her ingredients out.  She was using the wrong shortening.
