Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi ladies,

Over the weekend i had made 2 cakes...and when rolling out the fondant i found that there were a lot of air bubbles.  So i kneaded the fondant a bit more to try and get rid of the bubbles.  I was almost successful, but there were still bubbles!!  I had no choice but to put the fondant on as I had a cake delivery to do!

Once i put the fondant one, you could see these air bubbles again on the cake...

How do you pop them once the fondant is on the cake, as it leaves holes!?!

Any thoughts of what I may be doing wrong, or is it the fondant?

Many thanks!!

I once had my fondant covered cake totally decorated and when I was ready to leave for the party I noticed a couple of air bubbles. (I was probably careless when I put the fondant on the cake....probably was rushing) so I took a clean needle and with the pin on a angle I pierced a hole at the edge of the bubble and gently smoothed the fondant...worked great...could not even see the pin hole.
I have had the same problem with my fondant as of the last 3 times i made it. it is not the bigger air bubbles you can pop it is tiny little ones all over it. I to would love to know why.
Bela are you kneading powdered sugar or shortening? I find the shortening adds less air bubbles and keeps it smoth and soft and prevents "elelphant skin"

I knead with sugar...is that why it's drying up and having air bubbles?
Well yes..,.powdered sugar will dry out the fondant..you need it soft and smooth to cover the cake well....so if it is firm enough then knead shortening into it...it will make it soft and supple and you will be amazed how smooth the surface will get....
