Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Good morning everyone!

I have been asked to recreate the attached cake, which seems as though luster dust was added. My question is especially for the draped sections...is the luster added after the drapes have been laid or was the luster applied before. For the rest of the cake...could the luster be airbrushed on...or do I just use a big brush to apply it?

Looking forward to you feedback.

Regards,

Hopefully Jeri will jump in here but she has a cake posted that she used a large, soft brush to apply the luster dust after assembly.  My guess is that if you apply it and then handle the fondant you will loose some on your fingertips.

I am just guessing here but it seems as though a stencil was used for the luster dust in order to apply the pattern on the fondant. For applying to the cake, I think that would need to be accomplished once the fondant is on the cake otherwise you would have issues of the luster dust smudging when the fondant is being smoothed. Because the pattern seems to go on evenly including on the edges I think it would necessitate the stencil being very flexible. A light sheen of shortening applied all over to the fondant would enable the stencil to adhere somewhat and adding a light sheen of shortening to the top of the stencil can help keep the luster dust from poofing elsewhere while it is being applied. However, it is not apparent from the picture that any shortening sheen was added (the fondant where the pattern is not applied does not appear to be shiny in any way) so I may be way off in how they got it on there so accurately.
Now, as for the bow and ribbon, that definitely had to be applied beforehand as there would be no way to do it cleanly otherwise.
