Thanx for these ideas. I like the idea of placing a straw in the cake but will look in2 the holders 2. X

Straws do work well - I prefer the coffee stirrers because they leave a smaller hole, not much bigger than some wires, plus you can put 2 or 3 wires in 1.

When your talking of coffee stirrers, do you mean the little wooden sticks & if so how does that work

No, the little red or black coffee stirrer straws!  They also have white drink stirrer straws at some places.  They are like small straws!

When I do the decorations with uncooked spaghetti, it is when I am doing a completely edible cake.  So I do not have to worry if someone wants to eat the flower, as the spaghetti won't hurt them!

i was just thinking that coffee stirrers would be just right! another thing to add to my "to get" list!  ;)

Nope; Sandie is right the little black ones that are like straws.  I bought a case for like 6.00 at Sam's Club and there is about 10,000 in the case.

anytime I have to insert wires into a cake I use the coffee stirrers (thin plastic straws) or a regular straw which I add either royal icing or  a piece of fondant into to keep it in place.   Also a heads up that Wilton is the only company that makes FDA approved floral tape, and even that should not be inserted into a cake that is to be eaten.  There are floral holders avail that can be inserted into cakes that can be used for real, artificial or gumpaste flowers but I think the straw idea may be more suitable for what you have in mind.

I dip my wire into melted chocolate the color of the cake and put that straight into the cake.

Hi Amanda, i wonder if this would help-i have attached a cake photo which i made sometime ago

its relevant to your interest. when i do cakes of this type i usually (a tiny piece is all you need) add a piece of dry flower foam and cover it well with a piece of fondant.

You might etry using a straw. If you are using a large bouquet of flowers with wire you might try using a bubble tee straw. you can also try using melted white chocolate. All three work well.

You can use the flower spikes, you push them into the cake and then put the wire in the spike. You could also wrap the wire with plastic wrap and then push it into the cake. Hope this helps.
