I am doing my first wedding cake. It is a golf theme and I want to attached golf balls and tees (made from candy melts) to the cake. Should I attach them with buttercream? I am afraid they will fall off of the sides of the cake.
I think the tees will stay, but the chocolate golf balls will be too heavy for the sides of the cake. Why not place them on the top of the tiers? Is this a buttercream or fondant covered cake?
If you place them towards the bottom, so they are part of the border they will be okay as they will be resting on the cake board. You could lie the tees horizontally with a gold ball in between.
It is a buttercream icing. The golf balls are actually half golf balls made in a plastic mold, as are the tees.
Thanks for responding!

Well, they may stick then. Don't be surprised if they decide to pop off while transporting the cake. Just bring along a repair kit when you deliver it.
Yes, as others said, place them lower on the tier - near the border. Also if you can, hollow them out.
Either mold them hollow or scoop some of the choco out so they are no so heavy. Leave a nice 1/4" border, then pipe a circle of b'cream on that. It will create a suction to help hold it.
To mold hollow, fill mold, then turn over & let most of the choco pour out.
Thank you! Your ideas are all wonderful and I will post a picture (if it comes out halfway ok)! I did a test run this evening and came up with an idea that may work. I filled the mold of the golf ball half way, let it get semi-set, then put in a toothpick and filled it the rest of the way and let it set entirely. It seemed to work.
I am also going to take the Gum Paste and Fondant class at the local Michael's in July. I'll finally learn what gum paste is!

Great thinking :) We old times sometimes forget to mention things like that.
