Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am at a complete loss on this one! LOL  Yes, you read correctly.  This lady called and wants a celebration cake for her brother who just finished his probation sentence.

My first thought was to do a play on the "Get out of jail free" card from Monopoly.  She shot that one down but she doesn't know what she wants. I'm working with a 1/2 sheet cake.  Any ideas??

She didn't ask for a price.  I'm thinking the longer she is undecided on what she wants the more expensive it will be! LOL  (Joking of course)

Thanks in advance guys!!

I would ask her for more info about her brother and put the focus on all the things he will now be able to do that he couldn't do before, like travel for instance.
Thanks Carol!

Heck, I liked your original idea! If she didn't have a sense of humor on that then she shouldn't have mentioned the circumstances. I apologize for the negativity of my remark, sorry. How about open handcuffs. Yeah right! She probably won't go for that either. Another little jab that I probably should not have suggested. I do think you should charge her more, get it "charge" okay. I'm no help here! Just a lot of nasty joking remarks. When you finally get the idea down, please share it with us. I'm sure whatever you do will be great!
Hey, a celebration cake with two glasses and a champagne bottle - Cheers, free at last! Or is that too sarcastic too?
I certainly don't want to jeopardize your business! I wish you a lot of luck on this difficult subject!!!
LOL!! I like your remarks! I did talk with her just a few minutes ago and we are doing a two tier round....gray with dark clouds on the bottom "THEN" and bright sky blue with white clouds on the top layer "NOW". Then I'm doing a camping scene out of gum paste with a horse silhouette for the top (The things he enjoys now!) Then a road draping from top to bottom "It's been a long road" written on it. But here's where it gets really squirrely - She wants this written around the top layer " Free at last! No probation and no Jean" Jean was his step mother!! I didn't ask if she died or what! For all I know he killed her and that's the reason he was in prison to start with!! LOL
Fun times in the cake biz!! ;) I'm fearful to post any photos of the finished product! It might end up on cakewrecks!

Wow, it sounds like you came up with some great ideas. I can't wait to see it when you are finished.
What about a "welcome home" cake...those ideas sound cute...however the person being released might feel weird about calling that much attention to his jail time....no "cakewalk"....forgive me for the pun...:P

Here's the final product! It's sort of anticlimactic now that it's done! LOL I'm not the best photog in the world but This was the most interesting side. The opposite side has "Then" on the gray lower tier. and "Now" on the cheerful top tier. I used my cricut cake to cut out the gum paste horse back rider. The red is a tent and you can't see the campfire very well in this photo but I hesitated to put it too close to the tent in case he was in jail for arson!! LOL
She did call to cancel the "No more probation - no more Jean" I was thankful of that. All in all, it's not too bad considering what I had to work with :)
With what you had to do with your customer's scary request, I think you did an amazing JOB! I hope no one ever gets this type of request ever!!! Keep her name in the back of your mind and remember the initial reason for this cake should you ever decide to do business with her again, LOL. Charge MORE!!!!
Great Job!

Maybe ask what the guy was on probation for, go from there. I am guess since she wants to make a cake its nothing to serouis. Do like some jail bars and some handcuffs a cop cars maybe. Whatever he was on probation for like drugs put that on there just in a joking way. Just all depends on what he was in for. Of course get the okay with her. :)
LOL, this is the craziest request I"e ever heard of! I've been following this post cuz it's just so absurd and I can't stop laughing- oh..wait....is that bad!? Anyhoo, great job with the cake, though. I just can't even imagine TELLING someone that a relative was in jail and I need a cake for his release....kinda something to keep in the family I would think. Pretty sure I would have just gone to the supermarket, bought a cake and wrote 'welcome home' on it myself. LMAO!!!!
It may seem crazy, but when a person gets out of jail or off probation to some people its a HUGE deal. I always thought you got rewards for doing good in life, it doesn't always work like that with some folks. At least he has a family that supports him. :) I know we all make mistakes and nobody is perfect. If the customer wants a cake to celebrate with her family thats her business. God is the real judge. May God bless them! GREAT job on the cake! I love the ideal you came up with! :)
