My cousin wants me to make her son a roach bug cake for a cast party. They are doing the play"Metamorphosis" next week. I am making the cake chocolate covered in fondant. I need some ideas.how would you go about making the legs and antennae? It needs to serve about 30 kids.So I alos need to know how big a cake am I going to need[what size pans]
A 13x9 oval is supposed to serve 30 and it's already about the shape of the creature you are making...so not a lot of carving involved but if you want to carve it some you could make the next size up in the oval pans. Just a thought. I would make the legs out of modeling chocolate and just clip little spines in them with the sharp tip of some little sewing scissors (snips) The modeling chocolate has a little bit of a sheen too
When I made a butterfly for my granddaughter, I used flower wire and wrapped sugarpaste around it. The great thing about this is that you can shape it as you want, so you could have some legs straight and others bent, to give the effect of it crawling!!!!!!!!!! If you want to put fine hairs as well, just use a tiny pair of sharp scissors and snip and pull at the same time. I found this worked well to create the spiky hair on the club penguin puffles that I have made this year.
thanks everyone. We did it. We used chocolate fondant mixed with some melted chocolate candy corn, to make the legs and it worked out great. I made the fondant and baked the cakes and my dd Jeanna did all of the decorating. She is going to be the main decorator for the gross and unsual stuff. She did an awesome job.
