Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi guys:

I made a couple calla lillies yesterday around 6p.m  and at 10:20p.m today the centres are still not dried...and somehow i get the impression that they won't dry anytime soon...lol...I'm now thinking that i may have used too much shortening when working the paste. could i be right? the petals are nice and dry...looking lovely...i will be making the lillies for the wedding cake tomorrow and would love to get an idea of what i may have done wrong...

Thanks,

When I make cala's I use gumpaste for the pistels and don't use any crisco. Why did you use shortning in them? I never use shortning in my gumpaste.
@ Jeri...I made them out of gumpaste. I learnt to use a little shortening (crisco) when working the gumpaste...I may have used a little too much...the petals are fine...just the pistil....won't use any crisco for the pistils..:)

@ MissLisa...I will take your advice on not using the crisco to work the paste for the pistil. These won't be laying flat..they will be all over the place, hanging down and such...so it has to be dry...even this morning they were still wet...I just dumped them in the trash...lol...will re-do them later when I get off work.

Thanks guys for the help.
Hi Sherry:

I may have unintentionally worked the shortening into the pistil...poor me...but will ensure that I do not use it later (just for the pistil)...these lillies must be perfect...I"m dealing with a bride that wants everything to be perfect...poor me again...lol...I'll pull it off...I belive in me!!!! :)

I too use shortening when working with gumpaste...but only to lightly grease my hands and any surface I may be rolling it out on..I usually don't work it into the gumpaste itself...I find shortening easier...some people use cornflour or cornstarch or powdered sugar for rolling...if the gumpaste starts to dry out I usually pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it.
HI Teneshia,

I agree with Sherry. Sometimes you do need to apply some shortening on yur hands when the gumpaste gets a bit dry.

Try again. Best of luck.
