Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

GSA got the Buttercream Satin Ice in and I ordered a pail to see what I thougt.... it came today and I opened it up and tasted it... not sure if I like it or not.  Was not blown away by the first bite.  WIll try again... I had just eaten a BBQ Beef Sandwich and that might have had something to do with it.

Anyone else tried it yet?   Just wondering if it was me... or if it really is better than my first bite.

I'll say this... the flavored ones (like berry and lemon and cherry etc) are great for figures, but on a cake, they are a little shocking. Lemon fondant could go on a lemon cake, but it's not worth the investment to me. Fondant should be neutral and meld with the rest of the flavors. Their buttercream flavor is good, but for the money I'll stick with Satin Ice for now.

I guess I'll throw my 2 cents in too. I've never even made fondant, and to be quite honest, I'm scared - very scared!! :S
I was impressed with Satin Ice, I've also heard Wilton has a new 'recipe' but don't think I've tried it. But there is also a group here on CWB, where I learned about FONDARIFIC fondant. I ordered some samples and I must admit, Berry Flavor, Vanilla, Choco Mocha, Cherry, Lemon.... all sound yummy (and tasty, the ones I tried), but there are a bit more expensive than Satin Ice.
I agree, I'd do it as a special request if someone wanted a "cherry" cake or something, but to be honest, i wouldn't pay twice as much even for fondant animals, as most people don't eat them to even know it was cherry, right? or do they? so paying for the cherry flavor just to have the color red, seems like a waste.

I usually like to buy the white one. Once I tried the ivory and didnt feel right to me..
I got a sample pack of fondariffic and it was ok... but I agree... I think the flavor would fight with the cake. I like the way my cakes taste so don't want to mess with that!!! I got a bucket of ivory last week and was going to finish what I had in another bucket before breaking into the new one and the colors are a bit different so I used it all from the new bucket and will use the other on a smaller cake I have coming up in July. I agree with you Jeanne... black and red are the worst to try to make... I always buy them premixed.
I haven't tasted it .... it's very expensive to buy here!!!
Where is "here"? I buy it online. www.fondantsource.com is the cheapest I've seen.

Jenifer, Danielle is in Victoria, Australia.  We have members all over the world.  Sometimes brands which are available in the US aren't available elsewhere and vice versa.

Hi everyone,

I thought i'd give my opinion too...i have been using Satin Ice, and i absolutely love it.  It tastes good and good to work with.  I do find however sometimes it gets dry, but that could be my own doing leaving it exposed sometimes!!

But i had one question...i've noticed that when I put the fondant on the cake a day before the delivery, the next day its become hard....i suppose that is normal?  I would think it gets a little hard, but not so much.  Any reasons for this??

I like Satin Ice too.... Wilton in nasty.  A few weeks ago, one of the websites had it on sale for almost half off, I wish I would have bought more.  I like buying the colored ones, then you don't have to color it yourself.   I haven't tryed the buttercream flavor.  But so far the vanilla is good for me.
Yes, it gets hard...though because its put over a layer of buttercream its not so hard you can't cut through it. Pieces NOT touching the moisture of the buttercream basically turns candy hard.(like perhaps a bow or other decorations that are layered on top.

I have Satin Ice White/Buttercream and I love it!! I covered a wedding cake and they all love it. I used it on my bathing cow cake and everyone loved it. It has a soft cream taste. I'll use it again.
Satin Ice for me!  I love the way it handles and those that do not like fondant tend to like Satin Ice when I cover my cakes with it.  I only use Wilton for very small details and most of the time I'll do a 50/50 mix with Satin Ice.
