Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I have seen when looking at pictures that many of you use a combination of fondant and gumpaste.  I am fairly new to the use of both and am a self-taught cake decorator for the most part.  I am wondering what the proportions of the mixture are and exactly why you do this.

The ration would be 50/50 and though I am no expert I am assuming the ration is 50 fondant to give a longer working time and pliability and 50 gumpaste for the drying properties and hardening.properties. I have used this mixture and it is a good one for figure modeling.
