Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Just wanted to let everyone know that I was reported to my county health department yesterday by someone who viewed my "Cakes We Bake" profile.  The notification included a screen shot of my profile on here, along with all postings I have done on this site.  I do not know if it was a random person, or perhaps a member of the county office.  I do not advertise that I am a member of this site to anyone, so it could only come from here.

I am not licensed and have been aware of the risk I am taking.  I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone else who is not licensed and may be making cakes for profit for others, outside of your friends and family.  I will not be fined (this time) but will be if I do not discontinue selling my cakes/cupcakes.

This is really hard for me,  but again it is something I knew I was taking a risk with.  To obtain a license in Wisconsin you must have a seperate kitchen only used for baking/decorating, along with other rules of course.  We do not have the funds, time or space to do that at this time.

I have enjoyed being a part of this community, but must remove myself now.

Take care all.

I'm so sorry, Megan.
You can still be a member of this site without selling... do you advertise that you are baking cakes and selling for profit? Or is it just assumed that, if you are on this site, you must be doing that? I personally like this site to learn tips for my hobby - am I going to have someone coming after me if I don't remove myself? That doesn't seem right...
Hey Megan, I am really sorry to lose you as a member. Think about staying just for "cake sakes". But if you do decide to go, best of luck to you and look me up on facebook...
Sorry to hear that. Have you ever thought about renting a church kitchen? It's the same in IL too. I don't sell anything first of I'm not that good yet and second I'm too afraid. I wish we got get a cottage law passed here.Is it possible it happened on FB?
I'm not going to get into how people should handle their businesses. That's between you and God. If you make your profile public, anyone can see it. You do have the option of only allowing friends to view your profile. You do not have to display your hometown and state in your profile settings. If you are concerned about this, directly under your name you will find a link to manage your page. Click on that and then "profile" to change your city and state.
FYI, if you were found on facebook, chances are, someone googled your name and that's how they found you here. Your name here is your choice, if you know what I mean.
Just one more thing... take your phone number off the internet.
I know for a fact that the health department has designated people to peruse the cake forums for people making cakes for the public and cracking down on home bakers...it has been posted here more than once.....Theresa has some good advice and those who do this without a license or not in a commercial kitchen would do well to follow....

And Megan I am sorry to hear....
Sorry to hear that. I know there are reasons for health regulations and liscensing for taxes, etc... But it's kind of creeepy people are trolling this site to reprt people. If it was a health dept. employee (but shouldn't they have better things to do?) it is one thing, but if it was just a petty person w/ a grudge that's awful. I only bake for friends and family, when people ask why I don't start a business I explain about the laws. I wouldn't risk it, but don't have anything but good wishes for those who do.

Where in wis?
Hi,
Do you know of any such kitchens in the Manitowoc or Sheboygan area? I have looked on the interent and saw the one in Algome, and ones in Green Bay and Appleton, but all of these would be too far for me.
Thank You

I only do cakes now for friends and family because I would be too worried about getting caught without a liscence, but someday I'd love to be able to have a business

If there is anyone who knows how to get in touch with Megan S please let me know. I will check my database for a shared use kitchen or kitchen incubator in her area. There is the Farm Market Kitchen Incubator located at 520 Parkway Ave, Algoma, WI 54201, Phone: 920-421-0995, Phone 2: 920-487-9750, mcarlson@farmmarketkitchen.com

Often facilities such as these are knowledgeable of other shared use facilities or restaurants/bakeries will to help start-ups.
Sorry to see Megan go, but this is quite valuable information she has posted - as well as the replies. Like any business, licenses and other legal factors have to be considered when starting a cakes business. A shared use kitchen is a wonderful idea. Also, sometimes schools are willing to allow use, depending on their policy.

This is horrible. I am a member of the Wilton Instructor Forum and I found out that they report their students too! I understand why the health department is so hard but it just seems like they could help people make a living. I also heard bakers report "non" licensed bakers. So sorry to hear about this.
