Silver dragees turning into gold, rose, dark grey colors...anything but silver!

OMG....I am decorating using silver dragees and they have turned into a gold tone, or opaque. I'm not painting over them, each cake gets finished first then added some silver pearls as accent. Soooooo, has this happened to any of my friends?

I've never used the silver ones, Sandra.

Linda, I have to say, it has happened before, but I thought it was because I had them for some time. But I just bought these ones (at my Cake Store), so same brand, good ones, and in a day, they changed colors, from silver to gold; others so opaque they look black. I'm sooooo disappointed, I have been working on 24 cupcakes and 24 cakepops, until 1:30 am for this to happen.

Do you suppose the icing has anything to do with it?

I don't think so, they have been added to fondant decorations, tiny ones dropped into big pearls, and they all have changed in colors. Not the ones kept in the bag where I bought them from they are still perfect.  OHHHH, the tiny ones I bought from Sharon Zambito, I better drop the bomb to her to see if she knows. (lol)  I am in "AWE" at what could it be.  I will have to put some in the mail going to you, so you can test them there...jijjijiji.  I am not kidding, I will send them tomorrow...

So you said that you put them into the bag with other pearl shaded ones? Do you suppose there was a chemical reaction that took place? I would contact Sharon too to see if she has had anything like this happen to anyone else.

No, no, I always keep them in the original packaging. Not mixed with anything.

Have never had that happen - how strange! Wish I could help!

I buy my dragees from my local bulk food store Sandra. And there in a small plastic bin, not even in idividual packages, and I have never had a problem. Only if I have touched them with my fingers, then the silver comes off. I am guessing you got a bad batch, cause what happened sounds weird.  I would send them back where you got them and see if you can get a refund.

So it has not happened to either one of you... June, I got them from two different sources. The 2mm from Sharon Zambito, the other two sizes 4mm and 5mm from my local cake decorating store. All 3 came in plastic bags. All 3 have changed in color, I mean the coincidence of this happening to all 3, really? I am so bothered by this...

Ok, a wild guess would be perhaps your temperature where they have been stored???  My caking area is in my basement.... cool & dry. That is where mine are kept, on a shelf.  I know the heat in my fingers took off the silver finish, that is why you use tweezers. Mine were just big enough to be picked up with my fingers. So, if the heat of my hands/fingers can do this, then maybe  heat/condensation got  into the bag where you were storing them.

Like I said Sandra.... this is just a guess...

So sorry this has happened.... so stressful... :o(

Noooo, I appreciate your thoughts and your input. I would have think so, since I live in FL. But it is nice and cool since I bought them recently. I do handle everything with my hands, can't deal with tweezers...now I am wondering, could it be my hands???

Sandra, maybe you could purchase some of those white cotton gloves and give them a try.
