Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Here's a tip..... run into your local Home Depot, Lowes, etc and look at the paint chips.  They normally have colors paired that I would never think of putting together.

The attached files are a paint scheme picked up at Home Depot and a cake I made using that scheme.

Deah, now THAT is one very clever thing to do! I love how your cake turned out. How did you get the paisley so perfect? Was that all free handed?

I wish my hands were steady enough to pipe that paisley free hand.  It is actually a stencil from Designer Stencils - http://www.designerstencils.com/Paisley-Cake-Top-P13886C52_SKU_C701...  It was so easy I think I'll invest in more!

Wow That is a great  idea. I am for sure going to use it. Thank you very much..

Very cool! But whoa! They sure aren't cheap are they! I wish they would sell things like that at Hobby Lobby where you can at least take advantage of their 40% off coupon! lol

Global Sugar Art, www.globalsugarart.com sells stencils as well, and they are a little bit cheaper than the other site.  I've never tried stenciling.  Hmmmm....I wonder if you COULD use the stencils they have at hobby lobby and Michael's for walls?

I have never checked out their stencils at Hobby Lobby...do you know, Eileen if they have something that would fit on something circular?

You can use the Hobby Lobby-Micheals stencils.  However, the one's I've purchased there are a thicker plastic and tend to stick to my buttercream.  Maybe a different recipe will work better but I'm not willing to change my recipe.

Love the colors.  I did a Lime Green, orange and black cake last week, it did come out pretty cool.  I have one more Zebra print cake to do this weekend and if I ever do another one it will be to soon.  I am sure I will have more since that is what every little girl I know wants!!!!!!!!

I guess stencils will be next, I just got into molds!!!!

Love the idea!  How do you all deal with a customer coming to you with a color sample and you try your level best to achieve that color, but in the end it does not really represent the color that well?  I had a cake last weekend to do and when i did the color it came out pretty close.  But by the time the color set it kind of went darker.  How do I even control that?  And ultimately how do you explain that to the customer when we are the "experts", we should know better?!  Any thoughts?

On a side note - this is the first cake I did stenciling on...the damask.  I thought it was pretty straight forward but have to get more practice on how thick the BC should be on.

Meera, some of the wedding colors are extremely hard to match - especially David's Bridal colors.  I think David's does that intentionally.  I never guarantee a color match just something close.  Tell your customer up front and they won't expect perfection but sometimes they will get it.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that bright colors (neons) tend to glow more after they've set and dark, intense colors go darker.  I guess the way to combat that is to mix them the day before you need them so you can adjust if necessary.  Remember, we don't have the same dyeing capabilities that fabric manufacturers and paint manufactures have so a perfect match every time just isn't realistic.

You are right in that we are experts but we are experts at art and color matching is science not art.  Don't beat yourself up about it, do your best and the customer will be fine.

Nice work on the damask cake.  I love that pattern.

Meera, I just read this blog article and thought you might be interested.  http://acaketorememberva.blogspot.com/2012/06/youre-responsible-for...

I read a lot of her articles.  She's a no-nonsense kind of business woman.  Really knows her stuff, too.

Thanks Deah, that's a great tip, this way we can have some funky colored cakes.  Your cake is beautiful, I love the color.
