Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hello Everyone!

First of all, let me just say I am LOVING this website and there are so many talented decorators out there!!! I actually just joined, so I am still figuring out how to navigate around!

My question is this... how do I assemble fondant/gumpast figurines and keep them supported??? I love molding little people/characters, but cannot figure out how to keep them from falling over (I have an example of what I mean on my page under "photos").  I tried using lollipop sticks, but for some reason, it didn't work out so good.

I really want to get good at sculpting faces so they look as realistic as possible! Is there a secret to this???

Any advice and/or tips are greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you all so much and I look forward to hearing from you!!! :-)

Diana, it really depends on how big the figure is...you can see some examples in my photos...everything that I have made were supported with ONLY a single tooth pick....arms, legs, details were all attached with gumpaste glue or water...for larger projects, which I havn't done any, I would think might require a wire frame. but as I said, I just use toothpicks, dipped in gumpaste glue...for standing figures a toothpick in each leg, make sure enough is sticking out to be inserted into a cake....I use styrofoam as a temporary "resting spot. HTH (hope that helps).
Cant help you with the best edible medium for sculpting, maybe modeling chocolate?

I've made animals,, and figures like elmo ect. when it comes to people i've noticed they use modeling chocolate, there is a recipe on cc. u-tube has a lot of tutorials, i pretty much make my bottoms flat, and a lot of animals i've made like the dog have the feet for support same as the frog, i've used toothpicks if a head or arm keeps falling off, i also use 50/50 my elmo's but got really big lol, check out the modeling chocolate for faces and bodies , cake boss and ace of cakes us that for people hope this helps
Check out You tube. There are alot of tutorials there on faces and figures. I saw a site today and she used a styrofoam base and placed wood skewers in the foam to support the different poses at they were drying. They have to be done in sections to allow them to dry. I use fondant with a little gumtex worked into the fondant and it will dry hard. Hope this helps... The modeling clay section at Michaels has some cute little molds to use. I've also used candy molds. .
